Down at Mitchell Center on Saturday, the Troy Trojans and the South Alabama Jaguars will be matching up in college basketball activity.
Troy enters this game with a 7-10 record overall. The Trojans have lost three of their last four and fell to Texas State in their last outing. In that one, Trojans forward Jordon Varnado put up 17 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Wesley Person is the top Troy scorer this season with 20.4 PPG, while Varnado is second on 17.4 PPG and 6.3 RPG. The only other Trojans player in double-digits is Alex Hicks (11.2 PPG), who also leads the team on 8.1 RPG.
Over on the South Alabama side, they’re sitting at 9-8 this year. The Jaguars lost two games in a row to start the year, but destroyed Trinity Baptist in their last outing. In that one, South Alabama’s Rodrick Sikes and Jordan Andrews each had 16 points.
Sikes leads the Jags in scoring this season with 18.1 PPG. The only other South Alabama player in double-figures is Josh Ajayi with 12.3 PPG and 6.5 RPG, but Jordan Andrews is close on 9.6 PPG.
The Trojans are 14-4 ATS in the last 18 games following a straight-up loss and 6-2 ATS in their last eight versus the Sun Belt. Troy is also 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 1-4 ATS in their last five games following an ATS win.
Meanwhile, South Alabama is 5-0 ATS in their last five home games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall. The Jaguars are also 8-2 ATS in the last 10 Saturday games and 4-1 ATS in the last five versus a team with a losing straight-up record.
Troy has been all over the place this year, but generally speaking they’re staying in games even when they lose. The same could be said about South Alabama, aside from a 24-point loss to UT Arlington last Saturday. This should be a pretty decent game matchup-wise, but I’m taking Troy’s offense to fuel a cover here.
