The St. John’s Red Storm hope to shake up the college basketball rankings with an upset of the #1 Villanova Wildcats.
The top ranked Villanova Wildcats know they have a target on their back and need to be at their best every game. Villanova did just that and then some in an 89-65 rout of the #10 Xavier Musketeers as a 9.5 point home favorite. The Wildcats limited the Musketeers to 41.4% and countered at a hefty 55.2% to win easily.

Phil Booth led five Wildcats to score in double figures with 21 points on 8-11 from the floor followed Jalen Brunson with 17 points on 6-12 shooting. Villanova received 15 points and nine rebounds from Mikal Bridges on 5-12 while Eric Paschall and Donte DiVincenzo tossed in 14 points and eleven points respectively.
The St. John’s Red Storm have sparkled during their non-conference schedule and struggled so far in the early stages of their Big East schedule with five straight defeats following a 69-66 loss to the Georgetown Hoyas as a 6.5 point home favorite on Tuesday. The Red Storm held a small 37.7%-33.3% shooting edge but faced a 22-16 deficit at the line.
Shamorie Ponds paced the St. John’s attack with 17 points and six helpers on 5-15 from the floor and 7-8 from the line followed by a 16 point, four board, four assist and five steal performance from Justin Simon on 6-10 shooting. Marvin Clark II gave the Red Storm 15 points and seven rebounds while Bryan Trimble Jr. chipped in with eight points.
The Wildcats have to be wary of a letdown virtually every time they take the floor so the Red Storm can’t be overlooked…
