The Temple Owls snapped their 5-game losing streak and improved to 8-8 (1-4 AAC) on the season after defeating the SMU Mustangs, 66-64, this past Wednesday. Temple was outstanding on the defensive end and was able to secure the upset victory after the Owls, Josh Brown, scored the game winning shot with just 1.5 seconds left in regulation. Temple held SMU to 33.3% (9-27) from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Mustangs by a 40-33 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Owls was Quinton Rose who had 23 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal. On the season, Temple is averaging 68.7 ppg on 43.3% shooting from the field. The Owls are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 33.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Defensively, Temple is allowing their opponents to average 70.1 ppg on 45.2% shooting from the field. The Owls have a rebound margin of -3.2 and a turnover margin of 0.6.
The Tigers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Saturday games however, are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Owls are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 Saturday games and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
Memphis has piled up some wins this season, however, the Tigers haven’t been overly impressive on either side of the ball this year and currently rank just 266th in scoring offense, 213th in defensive FG%, and 333rd in 3P-FG%. Temple is one of the hardest teams to figure out this season as although the Owls have quality road wins against Auburn, Clemson and SMU this season, this is also the same team that put up only 39 points against UCF last Sunday. Temple has struggled at times offensively, as they rank just 298th in scoring offense, however, they do have a decent defense that ranks T-122nd in scoring defense and 153rd in steals per game. It’s hard to trust Temple, however, Memphis has yet to win away from home this season and as I think the Owls will have confidence back after beating a very good SMU team on the road, I’m going to take Temple to cover this home spread.
