We have some Conference USA action on the hardwood Saturday afternoon, as the Florida Atlantic Owls visit the UTSA Roadrunners in a college basketball matchup.
The FAU Owls will look to build some steam after snapping a 6 game losing streak with their first conference win of the season in a 73-66 victory over UTEP last time out. Justin Massey led the team with 18 points on 5 of 14 shooting with 4 threes, while Payton Hulsey came 2nd with 14 points and Ronald Delph added 12 points with 17 rebounds and 4 blocks for the double-double to round out the trio of double digit scorers for the Owls in the win. Delph leads the team with an average of 13 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, while Anthony Adger leads the team in assists with 2.7 assists per game this season. As a team, FAU is scoring 70.6 points per game on 41.5% shooting from the field, 31.3% from behind the arc and 73.7% from the foul line this season.

The UTSA Roadrunners will look to rebounds after dropping consecutive conference outings, including a 79-76 loss to FIU in their last outing. Jhivvan Jackson led the team with 22 points on 5 of 15 shooting with 3 threes, a 9 of 11 mark from the foul line and a team-high 3 assists. George Wilborn III came 2nd with 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Giovanni De Nicolao added 10 points to finish off UTSA’s trio of double digit scorers in the loss. Byron Frohnen scored 8 points but led the Roadrunners with 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Jackson leads the team in scoring with 18.4 points per game, while Frohnen leads the team in rebounding with 7.7 boards per game and De Nicolao leads the way in assists with 3.6 helpers per game this season. As a team, UTSA is scoring 84.4 points per game on 44.6% shooting from the field, 35.7% from behind the arc and 71.8% from the foul line this season.
FAU is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following a win and 1-8 ATS in their last 9 road games against a team with a winning home record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 conference matchups. UTSA is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a loss and 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 home games while the over is 15-5-1 in their last 21 games overall. The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I’m not ready to back FAU on the road after one win. The fact is that the Owls were still hard to watch during their losing streak and granted, a win over a past covering machine like UTEP is a confidence builder but UTSA is a whole different ball of wax, as they can light up the scoreboard whenever they want. FAU hasn’t been able to follow up a win with another solid performance as of late, while UTSA has shown the ability to recover from a loss, so I’ll lay the points with the Roadrunners here.
