The Western Carolina Catamounts snapped their 2-game losing streak and improved to 10-13 (5-5 Southern) on the season after defeating the Chattanooga Mocs, 70-68, this past Thursday. In a tight back and forth game that never saw either team have a lead greater than 5-points, Western Carolina was able to pick up the home victory after two FT’s from the Catamounts, Mike Amius, gave Western Carolina the lead for good with 0:16 seconds left in regulation. Western Carolina shot 48.0% from the field and 47.4% (9-19) from beyond the arc in the win. Leading the way for the Catamounts was Deriece Parks who had 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, Western Carolina is averaging 68.2 ppg on 40.4% shooting from the field. The Catamounts are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 34.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Western Carolina has been led by Mike Amius (12.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.0 spg), Deriece Parks (10.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.5 spg), Matt Halvorsen (8.8 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Marc Gosselin (8.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.1 spg). Defensively, Western Carolina is allowing their opponents to average 75.5 ppg on 46.7% shooting from the field. The Catamounts have a rebound margin of -3.3 and a turnover margin of 0.9.
The Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss however, are just 3-11 ATS in their last 14 road games. The Catamounts are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
Samford has lost 6 of their last 7 games and have really struggled defensively as the Bulldogs currently rank 326th in scoring defense and 338th in defensive FG%. Western Carolina was able to pick up a nice win at home against Chattanooga, however, it’s been a battle for the Catamounts this season as they rank just 299th in scoring offense and 264th in scoring defense. Samford hasn’t had much success on the road this season, however, as the Bulldogs have an offense that should be able to put up 75-80 points up on the board against the Catamounts defense, I think the Bulldogs do enough with the points to cover in this one.
