Saint Peter's vs. Canisius - 2/4/18 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Saint Peter’s Peacocks snapped their 6-game losing streak and improved to 9-13 (3-8 MAAC) on the season after defeating the Niagara Purple Aces, 58-52, this past Friday. Saint Peter’s was outstanding on the defensive end against Niagara and was able to hang on late after the Purple Eagles fought back from a 25-18 deficit at halftime. Saint Peter’s held Niagara to just 27.1% from the field and 17.9% (5-28) from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Peacocks was Nick Griffin who had 20 points, 3 rebounds, and a block. On the season, Saint Peter’s is averaging 66.7 ppg on 41.9% shooting from the field. The Peacocks are averaging 8.2 three-pointers per game on 34.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Saint Peter’s has been led by Nick Griffin (14.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.4 apg), Davauhnte Turner (11.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.0 spg), Sam Idowu (11.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.1 bpg), and Elijah Gonzales (7.0 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.6 spg). Defensively, Saint Peter’s is holding their opponents to an average of 67.1 ppg on 41.2% shooting from the field. The Peacocks have a rebound margin of -3.0 and a turnover margin of 2.3.

The Golden Griffins are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up win. The Peacocks are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games following a ATS win.

Canisius won 5 of their last 6 games and has been balanced on both ends of the court this season as the Golden Griffins currently rank 172nd in scoring offense, 57th in three-pointers per game, and 153rd in scoring defense. Saint Peter’s finally pulled off a win and although their offense has struggled this season, ranking 318th in scoring offense, however, the Peacocks have been great defensively as they come into this matchup ranked 59th in scoring defense and 47th in defensive FG%. Saint Peter’s can give you trouble on their home court, however, Canisius is a respectable 5-7 on the road this season and as I think the Golden Griffins are just the more talented team in this one, I’m taking Canisius and the point.
