Marshall vs. Florida International - 2/8/18 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Marshall Thundering Herd snapped a 2-game losing streak and improved to 15-8 (6-4 C-USA) on the season after defeating the UTEP Miners, 74-65, this past Saturday. Marshall went into halftime with a 34-24 lead and pulled away late after a 6-1 Thundering Herd run gave Marshall a 70-61 lead with 1:12 left in regulation. Marshall shot 42.4% from the field and just 28.6% (10-35) from beyond the arc in the win. Leading the way for the Thundering Herd was Jon Elmore who had 22 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal. On the season, Marshall is averaging 85.3 ppg on 46.3% shooting from the field. The Thundering Herd are averaging 9.8 three-pointers per game on 34.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Marshall has been led by Jon Elmore (22.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 7.2 apg, 1.8 spg), C.J. Burks (21.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.9 apg), Ajdin Penava (16.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.2 spg, 4.7 bpg), and Rondale Watson (10.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.2 spg). Defensively, Marshall is allowing their opponents to average 80.7 ppg on 45.1% shooting from the field. The Thundering Herd have a rebound margin of -5.3 and a turnover margin of 2.1.

The Golden Panthers are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games. The Thundering Herd are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games following three or more consecutive road games.

FIU has won 3 of their last 5 games and has been led by their defense this season that comes into this matchup ranked 122nd in scoring defense, 119th in defensive FG%, and 10th in turnover margin. Marshall was able to salvage a win on their 3-game road trip after losing to both Western Kentucky and UTSA and come into this game with one of the more high-powered offenses in the country as the Thundering Herd rank 11th in scoring offense, 35th in three-pointers made per game, and 29th in FT%. Marshall is a very tough team at home, posting a 12-1 record this season, however, the Golden Panthers have been great defensively as of late and as I think the FIU offense will be able to do some damage against Marshall’s 327th ranked scoring defense, I’m taking FIU and the points.
