We have some West Coast conference college basketball action on Thursday night as the BYU Cougars take on the Pepperdine Waves.
The BYU Cougars will look to build on back-to-back wins after splitting their last 6 games, including a 75-73 overtime win in their last outing, defeating San Francisco. TJ Haws led BYU with 26 points on 8 of 16 shooting with 3 threes and a team-high 7 assists. Yoeli Childs came 2nd with 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting with 9 rebounds while Elijah Bryant added 14 points with a team-high 11 rebounds and 4 steals for the double-double to round out the scoring in double digits for BYU in the win. Childs leads the Cougars with an average of 17.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while Haws is the team’s top assist man with 4.3 assists per game this season. As a team, BYU is scoring 74.8 points per game on 49.3% shooting from the field, 36.9% from behind the arc and 74.6% from the foul line this season.

The Pepperdine Waves could use a win to get out of the West Coast conference basement after losing 5 straight and 16 of their last 17 games following an 85-79 loss to Loyola Marymount in their last outing. Matthew Atewe led the Waves with 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting while Kameron Edwards and Coleby Ross tied for 2nd with 16 points apiece. Edwards added a team-high 9 assists while Ross dished out a team-high 9 assists in the losing effort. Eric Cooper added 4 triples as part of his 15 points while Trae Berhow added 10 points with 6 rebounds to round out the scoring in double figures for the Waves in the losing effort. Ross leads Pepperdine with an average of 14.4 points and 5.7 assists per game while Berhow leads the Waves in rebounding with 6 boards per game this season. As a team, Pepperdine is scoring 71.5 points per game on 44.9% shooting from the field, 33.2% from behind the arc and 69.7% from the foul line this season.
BYU is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 14-3-1 in their last 18 road games. Pepperdine is 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 home games and 10-25-1 ATS in their last 36 conference matchups while the over is 8-2 in their last 10 games following a loss. BYU is 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams and 0-6 ATS in the last 6 meetings at Pepperdine.
BYU is certainly susceptible to getting upset, just ask Loyola Marymount. And the Cougars have also had little success against the Waves ATS over the last few years and have had no success in this matchup on the road. However, Pepperdine is easily the worst team in the conference and is one of the worst in D-I, and BYU can ill afford a loss or even a poor performance here if they want to have a chance at an at-large bid should they not win the conference tournament, so I’ll lay the points in a game the BYU should cruise in.
