Elon dropped to 14-12 (6-7 CAA) on the season after being defeated by the Hofstra Pride, 67-48, this past Thursday. Elon struggled offensively throughout the night against Hofstra and allowed Hofstra to pull away after a 11-0 Pride run gave Hofstra a 61-44 lead with 4:44 left in regulation. Elon shot just 35.8% from the field and 20.8% (5-24) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Phoenix was Tyler Seibring who had 16 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block. On the season, Elon is averaging 74.8 ppg on 44.8% shooting from the field. The Phoenix are averaging 10.7 three-pointers per game on 36.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Elon has been led by Tyler Seibring (15.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 2.2 apg), Dainan Swoope (13.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.8 apg), Brian Dawkins (12.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.1 apg), and Dmitri Thompson (11.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.3 apg). The UNC Wilmington Seahawks dropped to 8-18 (5-9 CAA) on the season after being defeated by the James Madison Dukes, 62-61, this past Tuesday. UNC Wilmington fought back from a double-digit deficit with just over five minutes left to take a 61-60 lead late, however, James Madison retook the lead with two FT’s with 0:16 seconds left and the Seahawks couldn’t get a multiple game-winning shots to fall as time expired. UNC Wilmington shot just 36.2% from the field and 16.7% (4-24) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Seahawks was Devontae Cacok who had 16 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block, and a steal. On the season, UNC Wilmington is averaging 80.4 ppg on 44.0% shooting from the field. The Seahawks are averaging 7.6 three-pointers per game on 35.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UNC Wilmington has been led by Devontae Cacok (17.4 ppg, 13.2 rpg, 1.0 apg), Jordon Talley (16.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.6 apg, 1.0 spg), Ty Taylor II (13.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Jaylen Fornes (11.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.0 apg). Defensively, UNC Wilmington is allowing their opponents to average 84.4 ppg on 48.3% shooting from the field. The Seahawks have a rebound margin of 5.2 and a turnover margin of -1.7.
The Phoenix are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a losing home record however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Seahawks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
Elon came into CAA play with high expectations this season, however, have struggled as of late, losing 5 of their last 7 games. The Phoenix has a respectable offense that ranks 147th in scoring offense and 11th in three-pointers made per game, however, has struggled defensively as they rank just 244th in scoring defense and 341st in turnover margin. UNC Wilmington has lost 4 of their last 5 games and has struggled on the defensive end as they rank just 342nd in scoring defense and 328th in defensive FG%. UNC Wilmington has been playing well at home in conference play this season and was able to pick up a win on the road against the Phoenix earlier this season, however, as I think the Elon offense will bounce back and look like the offense that averaged 88 ppg in the three games prior to their recent loss against Hofstra, I’m taking Elon and the points in this one.
