We have some Big Ten college basketball action on Monday night as the Maryland Terrapins pay a visit to the Northwestern Wildcats.
The Maryland Terrapins will look to find some mark of consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 6 games, including a 61-51 win over Rutgers in their last outing. Bruno Fernando led the Terps by going 8 of 9 from the floor for a game-high 18 points with 16 rebounds for a huge double-double, while Anthony Cowan came 2nd with 14 points and team-highs of 6 assists and 5 steals. Kevin Huerter added 11 points to round out the trio of double digit scorers for Maryland in the win. Cowan leads Maryland with an average of 15.8 points and 5.1 assists per game while Fernando leads the Terrapins on the glass with 6.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Maryland is scoring 74.2 points per game on 48.2% shooting from the field, 38.6% from behind the 3-point line and 74.9% from the charity stripe this season.

The Northwestern Wildcats will look to rebounds after losing their 3rd straight game in heartbreaking fashion, blowing a 27 point lead in the first half en route to a 65-60 loss to Michigan State in their last outing. Vic Law led Northwestern with 21 points on 7 of 17 shooting with 5 threes and a team-high 5 assists, while Gavin Skelly came 2nd with 11 points and Anthony Gaines chipped in 10 points to round out the trio of double digit scorers for the Wildcats in the loss. Dererk Pardon added 8 points and a team-high 6 rebounds, while Scottie Lindsey hit a pair of triples for 6 points. Lindsey still leads the Wildcats in scoring with an average of 14.3 points per game while Pardon leads Northwestern on the glass with 7 rebounds per game and Bryant McIntosh leads NW in assists with 5.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Northwestern is scoring 69.6 points per game on 42.4% shooting from the field, 35% from behind the arc and 75.5% from the foul line this season.
Maryland is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a win while the under is 9-1 in their last 10 games overall. Northwestern is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games following a loss while the under is 17-5 in their last 22 games overall. The road team is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
I can see why Northwestern is the favorite here, as the Wildcats have been solid at home while Maryland’s SU record on the road is brutal, and if you take the points, you’re pretty much banking on a Terrapins outright victory. However, I’m not sure how much worse things could get for Northwestern right now, as their 3 game losing streak consists of a 16-point loss to these same Terrapins, a road loss to an average at-best Rutgers team and ending with the colossal collapse against Michigan State. This could be a bounce back performance for the Wildcats here, but I just don’t feel comfortable backing Northwestern right now, so I’ll take the free point with Maryland as I see the Terrapins winning a close one.
