The 18th ranked Rhode Island Rams had their 16-game winning streak and dropped to 241-4 (13-1 A-10) on the season after being defeated by the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 77-74, this past Friday. Rhode Island held a 72-67 lead with just 3:53 left to play, however, struggled offensively down the stretch and couldn’t force overtime after the Rams, Jared Terrell, missed two opportunities in the closing seconds to tie the game. Rhode Island shot 45.5% from the field and 39.1% (9-23) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Rams was Jared Terrell who had 23 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks, and a steal. The La Salle Explorers snapped their 3-game losing streak and improved to 11-16 (5-9 A-10) on the season after defeating the George Mason Patriots, 69-62, this past Saturday. La Salle trailed by a 45-32 margin at halftime, however, was outstanding in the 2nd half defensively and took the lead for good after a Tony Washington layup gave the Explorers a 61-60 lead with 1:20 left in regulation. La Salle held George Mason to 26.3% (5-19) shooting from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Patriots by a 43-35 margin in the win. Leading the way for the Explorers was Tony Washington who had a double-double with 20 points, 14 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block. On the season, La Salle is averaging 72.6 ppg on 42.6% shooting form the field. The Explorers are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 33.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, La Salle has been led by B.J. Johnson (20.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.5 spg), Pookie Powell (16.8 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.2 apg), Isiah Deas (9.7 rpg, 4.5 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.0 spg), and Amar Stukes (8.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.1 spg). Defensively, La Salle is allowing their opponents to average 74.3 ppg on 45.3% shooting from the field. The Explorers have a rebound margin of -1.3 and a turnover margin of 1.1.
The Rams are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Tuesday games and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games overall. The Explorers are 17-36 ATS in their last 53 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.
Rhode Island is coming off their first A-10 loss of the season, however, the Rams are still one of the better teams in the country and come into this one ranked 84th in scoring offense, 48th in scoring defense, and 4th in turnover margin. La Salle has some offensive talent in B.J. Johnson and Pookie Powell however, the Explorers haven’t been overly impressive on either end of the ball this season as La Salle ranks just 219th in scoring offense, 291st in FG%, and 233rd in scoring defense. La Salle has played well at home this season, posing an impressive 9-3 record, however, Rhode Island’s defense did a great job in forcing the Explorers into committing 19 turnovers in their 1st matchup of the season and as I think the Rams will being a little extra effort to make sure they get back on the winning track, I’m taking Rhode Island to cover this mid-range home spread.
