The James Madison Dukes and Drexel Dragons will square off at North Charleston Coliseum in the 1st round of the CAA Men’s Championship this Saturday afternoon.
It was a long season for the James Madison Dukes, however, James Madison did play better down the stretch, winning 4 of their last 7 games, and finished the regular season with a 10-21 overall record. James Madison earned the 9-seed in the CAA Men’s Tournament after finishing conference play with a 6-12 record while losing the tie-breakers to both Delaware and Drexel. James Madison struggled on both ends of the court throughout the season, however, should have some confidence coming into the tournament after recently taking the top-seed, College of Charleston, to overtime in an 81-78 loss. On the season, James Madison is averaging 73.5 ppg on 42.4% shooting from the field. The Dukes are averaging 7.3 three-pointers per game on 33.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, James Madison has been led by Stuckey Mosley (18.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.5 spg), Matt Lewis (14.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.2 apg), Darius Banks (10.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.5 spg), and Develle Phillips (8.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.2 bpg). Defensively, James Madison is allowing their opponents to average 75.6 ppg on 45.3% shooting from the field. The Dukes have a rebound margin of -0.3 and a turnover margin of 1.3.

The Drexel Dragons come into postseason play, losing 5 of their last 6 games, and finished their regular season with an overall record of 12-19. Drexel earned the 8-seed in the CAA Men’s Tournament after finishing conference play with an overall record of 6-12 while holding the tiebreaker over both James Madison and Elon. Drexel had one of the most exciting wins of the season recently after coming back from a NCAA record 34-point deficit to defeat Delaware, however, the Dragons haven’t been able to put together a lot of wins this season due to a defense that is prone to give up a lot of points. On the season, Drexel is averaging 75.0 ppg on 44.6% shooting from the field. The Dragons are averaging 7.0 three-pointers on 33.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Drexel has been led by Tramaine Isabell (21.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.2 spg), Kurk Lee (12.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.1 spg), Sammy Mojica (11.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.5 spg), and Alihan Demir (11.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.8 apg). Defensively, Drexel is allowing their opponents to average 79.5 ppg on 46.7% shooting from the field. The Dragons have a rebound margin of -0.2 and a turnover margin of -1.1.
The Dukes are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Dragons are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
James Madison and Drexel split their regular season series as the Dukes won at home by a 75-73 margin in mid-January while the Dragons won by a 76-74 margin at home in the beginning of February.
James Madison has been struggled on both ends of the court throughout the season as the Dukes come into this game ranked 193rd in scoring offense and 261st in the scoring defense. Drexel has a decent offense that ranks 146th in scoring offense, however, the Dragons haven’t fared that well on the defensive end as the Dragons rank just 324th in scoring defense and 299th in defensive FG%. Drexel has really struggled as of late and as I like how James Madison has played defensively as of late, holding their opponents to an average of 71.0 ppg in their last 4 wins, I’m taking James Madison to cover this spread.
