We have some C-USA college basketball action on Saturday as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers take on the UAB Blazers.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will look to bounce back after having their 6 game winning streak snapped thanks to an 82-64 loss to Middle Tennessee in their last outing. Lamonte Bearden led WKU with 24 points on 8 of 12 shooting while Justin Johnson added 14 points with a team-high 7 rebounds as the only other Western Kentucky player to score in double digits in the loss. Taveion Hollingsworth also chipped in 8 points and 7 boards in the losing effort for the Hilltoppers. Johnson leads Western Kentucky with an average of 14.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while Darius Thompson leads the Hilltoppers in assists with 4.8 assists per game this season. As a team, Western Kentucky is scoring 79 points per game on 50.1% shooting from the field, 36.3% from behind the arc and 70.4% from the foul line this season.
USA TODAY Sports
The UAB Blazers will be looking to find some consistency heading into the C-USA tournament after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 6 games following a 91-77 win over Marshall in their last outing. Chris Cokley led UAB with 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting in just 18 minutes, while William Lee and Nick Norton each added 15 points with Lee adding a team-high 14 rebounds and 3 blocks for the double-double while Norton added 6 rebounds while dishing out a team-high 9 assists. Lewis Sullivan added 12 points and Zack Bryant added 11 with 3 steals while Jalen Perry chipped in 10 points to finish off the double digit scoring for the Blazers in the win. Cokley leads UAB with an average of 17.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while Norton leads the Blazers with an average of 4.6 assists per game. As a team, UAB is scoring 76.1 points per game on 48.2% shooting from the field, 33.7% from behind the arc and 74.7% from the foul line this season.
Western Kentucky is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 conference matchups. UAB is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 games overall. Western Kentucky is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Despite losing their last outing, the Hilltoppers are the far more consistent of these two teams as of late, and I think Western Kentucky will use this game to get the bad taste out of their mouths from that outing against Middle Tennessee. The Hilltoppers are a much better team than how they played that night, so I’ll lay the bucket with the Hilltoppers on the road to get the job done here.
