We have some MEAC tournament first round action as the #6 North Carolina Central Eagles take on the #11 Coppin State Eagles in a college basketball matchup on Tuesday.
The Coppin State Eagles got their hands on the #11 seed in the MEAC tournament after finishing with a 5-11 conference mark as part of their 5-26 overall record this season. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that that means that Coppin State went winless through the non-conference portion of their schedule, going 0-15 with some high profile losses to Oregon, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Georgetown, UCONN, West Virginia, Georgia Tech and Penn State. Things didn’t get easier for Coppin State, losing 4 of their first 5 games, before responding with 3 straight wins. The Eagles then fell back into old habits, losing 7 of their next 8 games, including 5 straight to close out the season. Lamar Morgan led Coppin State with an average of 12.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while Karonn Davis led Coppin State in assists with 4.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Coppin State is scoring 61.2 points per game on 36.2% shooting from the field, 30.6% from behind the arc and 73.4% from the foul line this season.

The North Carolina Central Eagles ended up with the 6th seed in the conference tournament after a 9-7 mark in MEAC play as part of their 15-15 mark overall this season. NC Central had some tough opposition themselves, losing to teams like UIC, Evansville, Illinois, Marshall and George Mason as part of their 6-8 record out of conference. NC Central got out to a strong start in conference, winning their first 4 games and 6 of their first 8 before losing 3 straight and 5 of 7 en route to a .500 finish in MEAC action this season. Raasean Davis led North Carolina Central with 15.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while Jordan Perkins led NC Central in assists with 5.4 assists per game this season. As a team, North Carolina Central is scoring 73.5 points per game on 47.1% shooting from the field, 34.6% from behind the arc and 68.7% from the foul line this season.
Coppin State is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a loss while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 conference matchups and 4-0 in their last 4 neutral site games. NC Central is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference matchups and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall while the under is 14-3-1 in their last 18 neutral site games.
Neither of these teams play enough lined games for me to really read much into trends for this season. However, NC Central won the only meeting by 20 points and while this isn’t a true road game, Coppin State went 1-20 SU away from home this season. The Eagles haven’t been overly consistent but one thing Coppin State has done regularly is lose, so I’ll lay the points with NC Central here.
