We have some Big Sky conference tournament first round action on Tuesday as the #12 seed Northern Arizona Lumberjacks take on the #5 seed Northern Colorado Bears in a college basketball matchup.
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks will look for a big upset to kick off their tournament after an abysmal 2-16 mark in conference play as part of their 5-25 overall record this season. The Lumberjacks faced some pretty tough competition out of conference, losing to Arizona, Arizona State and Kansas State along with losses to San Diego and South Florida as well. The Lumberjacks also struggled once Big Sky play started, losing their first 7 and 13 of their first 14 games. Torry Johnson led NAU with 11.6 points per game while Brooks DeBisschop led Northern Arizona with 7.5 rebounds per game and Gino Littles led the Lumberjacks with 2.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Northern Arizona is scoring 65.8 points per game on 39.7% shooting from the field, 30.5% from behind the 3-point line and 70.5% from the foul line this season.
USA TODAY Sports
The Northern Colorado Bears finished the season with the #5 seed in the conference tournament after finishing 11-7 in Big Sky play and 20-10 overall this season. The Bears mastered their way through a decent out of conference schedule, taking down Wyoming and South Dakota while also adding a narrow 3-point road loss to a solid home team in UNLV just before Christmas. The Bears struggled with consistency through the first month or so in conference, sitting at 5-5 before winning 6 of their last 7 down the stretch before losing in their regular season finale to Sacramento State. Andre Spight led Northern Colorado with 22.1 points and 3.5 assists per game while Jonah Radebaugh leads the Bears on the glass with 6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Northern Colorado is scoring 80.2 points per game on 46.3% shooting from the field this season, 34.3% from behind the arc and 70.3% from the foul line this season.
Northern Arizona is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games while the under is 22-7 in their last 29 neutral site games. Northern Colorado is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400 while the under is 16-5 in their last 21 neutral site games. Northern Arizona is 5-2-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
The Lumberjacks may have had the majority of the success in this matchup, but Northern Arizona didn’t get the upper hand in the lone matchup this season, with the Lumberjacks losing to Northern Colorado by 35 points just a couple of weeks ago. Northern Arizona doesn’t have the horses to keep up offensively with Northern Colorado so I’ll lay the points with the Bears in this one.
