We have some ACC tournament first round action as the #15 seed Pitt Panthers take on the #10 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a college basketball matchup from the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York.
The #15 Pitt Panthers will look to pull off some upsets after finishing winless in conference play with an 0-18 mark in ACC play as part of their 8-23 overall record this season. Pitt had some decent matchups to start the year, with losses to teams like Navy, Penn State, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, while picking up 8 wins heading into conference play where things only went downhill for the Panthers. Of the 18 losses that Pitt suffered in conference, 15 of them came by double digits and 8 by 20 or more points. Jared Wilson-Frame led Pitt with an average of 12.8 points per game while Shamiel Stevenson led the Panthers with 4.4 rebounds per game and Marcus Carr led Pitt with 4.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Pitt is scoring 62 points per game on 40.6% shooting from the field, 32.7% from behind the arc and 69.6% from the foul line this season.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish ended up with the #10 seed after what many would call a down year for the program, finishing 8-10 in ACC play as part of their 18-13 overall record this season. The Irish got off to a strong 6-0 start including a marquee 1-point win over Wichita State. The Irish got as high as 13-3, winning their first 3 ACC matchups, but lost star forward Bonzie Colson to injury before the calendar turned to 2018 which was a big part of Notre Dame’s 7 game losing streak heading into February. Notre Dame partially righted the ship, winning 5 of their last 8 games to finish the year. Temple Gibbs led Notre Dame with 15.6 points per game while Martinas Geben led the Irish in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game and Matt Farrell led Notre Dame in assists with 5.3 assists per game this season. As a team, Notre Dame is scoring 75.6 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 37.5% from behind the arc and 75.4% from the foul line this season.
Pitt is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record and 15-37-1 ATS in their last 53 games following a game where they covered the spread while the under is 39-16 in their last 55 games overall. Notre Dame is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a game where they covered the spread while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a loss. Pitt is 4-0-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Pitt has had the majority of the success ATS when these two lock up. However, I’m not trying to back the Panthers after arguably one of the worst conference seasons in recent memory. Notre Dame won the only meeting by 17 points this season, and although the Irish lost to Virginia in their season finale, the Irish look like getting Colson back was the cure for what ails them, so I’ll lay the points with Notre Dame as I have zero faith in Pitt right now.
