We have some Sun Belt conference tournament first round action on Wednesday as the #12 seed Little Rock Trojans take on the #5 seed Appalachian State Mountaineers.
The Little Rock Trojans found themselves in the basement of the Sun Belt conference after a 4-14 mark in conference play as part of their 7-24 overall record this season. The Trojans got off to a pretty rough 0-5 start and found themselves sitting at 3-10 entering conference play with losses to Bradley, San Diego, Memphis and Mississippi State thrown in there. Little Rock got off to a decent 2-3 start, but losses in 8 straight and 11 of 12 down the stretch quickly sent the train off of the tracks but the Trojans did end the season on a high note with an overtime win over conference leader Louisiana as 20-point underdogs. Andre Jones was the Trojans leading scorer but will be suspended for the rest of the season due to conduct detrimental to the team. Jaizec Lottie leads the Trojans in assists with 2.9 assists per game while Oliver Black leads Little Rock on the glass with 7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Little Rock is scoring 63.7 points per game on 42.9% shooting from the field, 32.4% from behind the arc and 61.4% from the foul line this season.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers ended up with the #5 seed after finishing conference play with an even 9-9 record as part of a 14-17 overall mark this season. App State scheduled some stiff competition, taking down the likes of Davidson, UTEP and South Florida while also logging defeats at the hands of Iowa State, Western Michigan, VCU and Ohio State to name a few in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Appalachian State got out to a decent 3-1 start out of the gate, but lost 4 straight and 6 of 7 before regrouping to finish the season with victories in 5 of their final 7 games. Ronshad Shabazz led Appalachian State with 18.9 points and 3 assists per game while Isaac Johnson led the Mountaineers on the glass with 8.3 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Appalachian State is scoring 76.1 points per game on 43.6% shooting from the field, 33.9% from behind the 3-point line and 66.1% from the foul line this season.
Little Rock is 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 conference matchups. Appalachian State is 6-17 ATS in their last 23 games following a win and 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400 while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Little Rock is 3-0-1 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
The Trojans may have had the bulk of the success ATS when these two meet, including a 2-point and 5-point overtime game against the Mountaineers this season and have played a lot of tight games overall lately. However, the fact is that Little Rock still lost both of those games, and are the worst team in the conference. Appalachian State has the higher powered offense of the two and shouldn’t have much trouble taking down Little Rock here, so I’ll lay the points.
