The St. John’s Red Storm and Georgetown Hoyas will square off at Madison Square Garden this Wednesday night in the 1st round of the Big East Men’s Championship.
The St. John’s Red Storm finished their regular season with an overall record of 15-16 and earned the 9-seed in the Big East Men’s Championship after the Red Storm finished conference play with a 4-14 record. St. John’s struggled at the beginning of Big East play this season however, picked up two of the more improbable wins of the season after being both Duke and Villanova in back-to-back games in early February. St. John’s was led by their defense this season that ranked 65th in defensive FG%, 9th in steals per game, and 5th in turnover margin. On the season, St. John’s is averaging 73.0 ppg on 43.3% shooting from the field. The Red Storm are averaging 7.1 three-pointers per game on 33.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, St. John’s has been led by Shamorie Ponds (21.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 4.9 apg, 2.5 spg), Marcus LoVett (14.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.1 spg), Marvin Clark II (12.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.1 spg), and Justin Simon (12.0 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 5.2 apg, 2.5 spg). Defensively, St. John’s is allowing their opponents to average 72.0 ppg on 41.9% shooting from the field. The Red Storm have a rebound margin of -5.7 and a turnover margin of 4.6.
The Georgetown Hoyas finished their year with an overall record of 15-14 and come into the Big East Men’s Championship as the 8-seed after finishing conference play with a 5-13 record. Georgetown had a nice start to their season, winning 10 of their first 11 games with a relative light non-conference schedule, however, outside of their impressive win at Butler, the Hoyas struggled in Big East play and come into this game on a 4-game losing streak. Georgetown has been led by their offense that ranks 66th in scoring offense and 11th in assists per game. On the season, Georgetown is averaging 78.4 ppg on 45.6% shooting from the field. The Hoyas are averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game on 36.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Georgetown has been led by Jessie Govan (17.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.1 bpg), Marcus Derrickson (15.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 1.6 apg), Jamorko Pickett (9.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Kaleb Johnson (8.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.1 apg). Defensively, Georgetown is allowing their opponents to average 76.1 ppg on 43.6% shooting from the field. The Hoyas have a rebound margin of 4.7 and a turnover margin of -2.7.
The Red Storm are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win and 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Hoyas are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a straight up loss however, are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
Georgetown won both matchups against St. John’s this season as the Hoyas won by a 69-66 margin on the road in early January while winning a 93-82 (2OT) battle at home in mid-January.
Georgetown might be 2-0 against St. John’s however, the Red Storm is not the same team the Hoyas played in January. Georgetown will have an advantage on the boards in this one, but I really like how competitive the Red Storm have been down the stretch and as St. John’s is a very tough team to beat at Madison Square Garden, I’m taking St. John’s to cover this spread.
