The Florida Atlantic Owls and UAB Blazers will square off at the Ford Center at the Star this Wednesday night in the 1st round in the C-USA Men’s Championship.
The Florida Atlantic Owls finished their regular season with an overall record of 12-18 and earned the 11-seed in the C-USA Men’s Championship after the Owls finished conference play with a 6-12 record. Florida Atlantic really struggled on the offensive end this season as the Owls rank just 277th in scoring offense, 330th in FG%, and 323rd in three-pointers made per game and come into the conference tournament losers of 7 of their last 9 games. On the season, Florida Atlantic is averaging 69.4 ppg on 40.9% shooting from the field. The Owls are averaging 5.8 three-pointers per game on 32.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Florida Atlantic has been led by Ronald Delph (14.4 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 2.1 bpg), Justin Massey (13.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.5 apg), Gerdarius Troutman (12.6 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.1 apg), and Payton Hulsey (6.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.5 spg). Defensively, Florida Atlantic is allowing their opponents to average 69.6 ppg on 42.7% shooting from the field. The Owls have a rebound margin of 1.3 and a turnover margin of -0.2.
The UAB Blazers finished their year with an overall record of 19-12 and come into the C-USA Men’s Championship as the 6-seed after finishing conference play with a 10-8 record. UAB comes into postseason play, winners of 4 of their last 6 games, and should have a bunch of confidence after back to back double-digit victories at home against Marshall and Western Kentucky. UAB is a talented team that has been solid on both ends of the court as the Blazers rank 86th in scoring offense and T-88th in scoring defense. On the season, UAB is averaging 76.9 ppg on 48.7% shooting from the field. The Blazers are averaging 6.8 three-pointers per game on 34.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UAB has been led by Chris Cokley (17.2 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 1.6 apg), Zack Bryant (13.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.2 spg), William Lee (10.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 1.1 apg, 2.1 bpg), and Nate Darling (10.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.7 apg). Defensively, UAB is holding their opponents to an average of 68.8 ppg on 41.8% shooting from the field. The Blazers have a rebound margin of 7.1 and a turnover margin of -0.4.
The Owls are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss however, are just 1-10 ATS in their last 11 Wednesday games. The Blazers are 16-35 ATS in their last 51 neutral site games and just 3-15 ATS in their last 18 Wednesday games.
UAB won their only matchup against Florida Atlantic this season as the Blazers had little trouble in a 75-44 road victory in early January.
UAB has the talent to beat anyone in the C-USA and as I just don’t see how Florida Atlantic is really going to find any success on the offensive side of the ball in this one, I think UAB and their talented offense does enough to win by double-digits and cover this large spread.
