We have some WAC tournament quarterfinals action on Thursday as the #6 seed UMKC Kangaroos take on the #3 seed Grand Canyon Antelopes in a college basketball matchup.
The UMKC Kangaroos will look to pull off an opening round upset after finishing the regular season with the #6 seed after finishing with a 5-9 conference record as part of their 10-21 overall mark this season. The Kangaroos went 5-12 through the non-conference portion of their schedule, but faced some pretty tough competition against teams like Wichita State, Kansas State, Loyola-Chicago, South Dakota, NC State and Central Michigan in overtime. The ‘Roos struggled mightily out of the gate, starting 0-3 and 1-8 but rattled off 4 straight wins to salvage the season before closing out the season with back-to-back defeats, including a humiliating defeat to Chicago State in their regular season finale, giving Chi-State just their 3rd win of the entire season. Xavier Bishop led the Kangaroos with 11.7 points and 3.3 assists per game while Broderick Robinson led UMKC in rebounding with 5.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, UMKC is scoring 70.2 points per game on 40.6% shooting from the field, 33.7% from behind the arc and 70.9% from the foul line this season.

The Antelopes got out to a quick 4-0 start and 9-3 before ending the non-conference portion at 11-5 with their losses coming to Illinois, Louisville, St. John’s, San Diego and Boise State in overtime. Grand Canyon then proceeded to get out to a strong 6-2 mark in conference play, before losing 3 straight and balancing that out with 3 straight wins to finish the regular season. UMKC is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 conference matchups while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games following a loss. Grand Canyon is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall while the over is 4-1-1 in their last 6 neutral site games.
Neither of these two teams play many lined games so I’m inclined to throw trends out the window. However with that said, Grand Canyon is the team in better form here and did sweep UMKC, winning both meetings by 17 points this season. So I’ll lay the points as I expect more of the same from Grand Canyon here.
