In Big Sky Tournament college basketball activity from Reno Events Center on Thursday, the Southern Utah Thunderbirds and the Idaho Vandals will be matching up on the court.
Idaho enters this game with a 22-8 record overall. The Vandals have lost just once since January 25, and beat Southern Utah in their last appearance Saturday. in that one, Idaho guard Victor Sanders put up 28 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Sanders also leads the Vandals on the season with 19.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG and 3.3 APG. Also in double-figures for Idaho this year is Brayon Blake, who has 16.6 PPG and a team-high 9.5 RPG to his name.
Over on the Southern Utah side, they’re sitting at 12-18 overall this year. The Thunderbirds have won just twice in the last seven games, but one was in tournament action Tuesday against Idaho State. In that game, the Thunderbirds were led by Brandon Better’s 18 points.
Jamal Aytes leads the Thunderbirds on the year with 12.6 PPG, while Better is right behind on 12.5 PPG. Dwayne Morgan also has 12.5 PPG with 6.9 RPG, and Jadon Cohee rounds out the Southern Utah double-digits club with 12.3 PPG.
The Thunderbirds are 1-4 ATS in the last five Thursday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five versus a team with a winning record. The over is 4-1-1 in Southern Utah’s last six neutral-site games and 27-13-1 in their last 41 Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Vandals are 2-5 ATS in the last seven games overall and 2-5 ATS in the last seven versus the Big Sky. Idaho is also 1-5 ATS in their last six following a straight-up win and 1-7 ATS in their last eight Thursday games.
Although Idaho has won both meetings between these two teams this year, each game was close: 80-76 on January 18 and 78-76 on March 3. The Thunderbirds have a solid group of scorers this season and if they can get their defense on point they’ve got a real shot here. I’m going to go with Southern Utah to cover in what should be a fun game to watch.
