The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Old Dominion Monarchs will face off at the Ford Center at The Star this Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Men’s Championship.
The 10-seed Louisiana Tech Bulldogs improved to 17-15 (7-11 C-USA) on the season after defeating the 7-seed North Texas Mean Green, 68-62, last night in the 1st round in the C-USA Men’s Championship. Louisiana Tech led by a 31-27 margin at halftime and pulled away in the 2nd half after taking a 60-52 lead with :53 seconds left in regulation. Louisiana Tech shot 46.7% from the field and 33.3% (6-18) from beyond the arc in the win. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Jacobi Boykins who had 21 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks. On the season, Louisiana Tech is averaging 75.5 ppg on 44.8% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 8.7 three-pointers per game on 38.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Louisiana Tech has been led by Jacobi Boykins (14.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.0 spg), DaQuan Bracey (13.2 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 4.1 apg), Derric Jean (9.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.1 spg), and Amorie Archibald (7.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 4.2 apg). Defensively, Louisiana Tech is allowing their opponents to average 71.2 ppg on 44.2% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of -0.4 and a turnover margin of 0.7.
The Old Dominion Monarchs finished their regular season with a n overall record of 24-6 and earned the 2-seed in the C-USA Men’s Championship after finishing conference play with a 15-3 record. Old Dominion finished their season winning 7 of their last 8 games however, struggled against the other top teams in the C-USA this season as they went a combined 0-3 against Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky while losing those games by an average of 12.0 ppg. Old Dominion has been led by their defense that comes into this game ranked 7th in scoring defense, 34th in defensive FG%, and 7th in turnover margin. On the season, Old Dominion is averaging 74.5 ppg on 45.0% shooting from the field. The Monarchs are averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game on 36.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Old Dominion has been led by Ahmad Caver (14.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 6.2 apg, 2.2 spg), B.J. Stith (14.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.8 apg), Trey Porter (12.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.3 bpg), and Randy Haynes (12.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.4 spg). Defensively, Old Dominion is holding their opponents to an average of 63.2 ppg on 41.0% shooting from the field. The Monarchs have a rebound margin of 4.2 and a turnover margin of 4.4.
The Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record. The Monarchs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
Old Dominion won their only matchup against Louisiana Tech this season as the Monarchs won by an 82-69 margin on the road in mid-February.
Louisiana Tech had a nice win against North Texas however, the Bulldogs have struggled recently, losing 6 of their last 9 games, and has struggled offensively as during their last five games the Bulldogs have averaged just 67.6 ppg. Old Dominion is one of the best defense in the C-USA and as I’m not worried about the Monarchs putting up some points against the Bulldogs defense that ranks just 201st in defensive FG%, I’m taking Old Dominion to cover this spread.
Please Note: The Team/Players stats for Louisiana Tech are not updated with the results from their game against North Texas on 3/7.
