We have some Big West conference tournament quarterfinals action on Thursday as the #1 seed UC-Davis Aggies battle the #8 seed UC-Riverside Highlanders.
The UC-Riverside Highlanders will be looking to shock the conference after finishing in dead last, with a 4-12 conference mark as part of their 9-21 overall record this season. Give the Highlanders credit though, they scheduled some solid competition and took them down as well, with wins over Cal, Air Force and Valparaiso, but still came into the conference portion of their schedule with work to do. Work that was left undone for a long time after starting conference play with 8 straight losses and alternating wins and losses through each of the last 8 games to finish the year. Chance Murray led Riverside with 12.4 points and 3.8 assists per game while Alex Larsson led the Highlanders with 5.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, UC-Riverside is scoring 65.3 points per game on 40.2% shooting from the field, 31.1% from behind the arc and 70.4% from the foul line this season.

The UC-Davis Aggies on the other hand enter the tournament as the top seed after finishing Big West conference play with a 12-4 mark as part of their 21-9 overall record this season. UC-Davis got out of their non-conference portion with a 9-5 record, taking on some stiff opposition of their own with losses to Nevada, Washington and San Francisco while also picking up wins against Northern Colorado and Washington State. The Aggies started conference play up and down, going 3-2, but followed that up with 4 straight wins and wins in 9 of 11 to close out the year, winning their last 5 games of the regular season. China Moneke was the Aggies leading rebounder and scorer with over 18 points and 9.5 rebounds per game but was suspended indefinitely following a police investigation. TJ Shorts II leads the Aggies right now with 15.3 points and 4.3 assists per game while A.J. John leads the Aggies in rebounding with 4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, UC-Davis is scoring 73.6 points per game on 47.1% shooting from the field, 37.5% from behind the arc and 71.9% from the foul line this season.
UC-Riverside is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall while the under is 3-0-1 in their last 4 conference matchups. UC-Davis is 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games against a team with a losing record and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the under is 8-3 in their last 11 neutral site games. The underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
The Highlanders have done a good job in playing up to their competition this season and did lose by just one point against the Aggies just a couple of weeks ago. However, UC-Davis is the team to beat in the Big West in my opinion, and just are in much better form than UC-Riverside right now, so I’ll back the Aggies to advance to the semifinals with a double-digit win in this one.
