We have some A10 tournament second round action on Thursday as the #9 seed Dayton Flyers square off against the #8 seed VCU Rams in a college basketball matchup.
The Dayton Flyers entered the conference tournament as the #9 seed following an 8-10 conference mark as part of a 14-16 overall record this season. Dayton struggled to find consistency out of the gate, splitting their first 12 games at 6-6, and never had more than a 2 game winning or losing streak during their entire run of conference play, but did have a stretch of 6 losses in 8 games from mid-January to mid-February. Josh Cunningham led the Flyers by averaging 15.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while Jalen Crutcher was Dayton’s leading assist man with 4.3 assists per game this season. As a team, Dayton is scoring 72.4 points per game on 48.3% shooting from the field, 34% from behind the arc and 72.8% from the foul line this season.

The VCU Rams ended up with the #8 seed, losing out in a 4-way tiebreaker for 5th place with a 10-8 record in A-10 play and a 17-14 overall record this season. The Rams were slightly better out of conference, finishing out of conference with an 8-5 record, with a win over Old Dominion & Cal and losses to Seton Hall, Texas, Michigan, Marquette and the top team in the country in Virginia. VCU struggled with consistency as well, splitting their first 6 games before winning 3 straight and followed that up with losses in 4 of 5 and 6 of 8 before ending the season on a high note with a win over Fordham. Justin Tillman led VCU with 18.9 points and 9.7 rebounds while Jonathan Williams led the Rams in assists with 5.7 assists per game this season. As a team, VCU is scoring 76.2 points per game on 45.9% shooting from the field, 35.5% from behind the 3-point line and 69.6% from the foul line this season.
Dayton is 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games following a win and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record. VCU is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 7-16 ATS in their last 23 games following a game where they covered the spread while the over is 8-3 in their last 11 games following a win of 20 or more points. The over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
I think both Dayton and VCU are going through a down year by both teams’ standards and while VCU struggled a lot this season, I think that they are a safer team to bet than the Flyers right now, so I’ll lay the bucket with VCU here.
