Coming up on Friday afternoon in SWAC Tournament college basketball activity, the Southern Jaguars and the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions will be meeting up on the court.
Southern comes in here with a 15-17 record overall. The Jaguars had lost three straight games before taking a win over Jackson State in their last outing. In that one, Southern guard Eddie Reese put up 21 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Leading the way in scoring for Southern this year is Jared Sam with 16.3 PPG and 9.1 RPG. Also in double-figures for the Jaguars on the season is Reese, with 10.9 PPG, 3.1 RPG and 3.3 APG to his name.
Over on the Arkansas-Pine Bluff side, they’re sitting at 13-20 on the year. The Lions have won four of their last five games, and took out Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday. In that one, Arkansas-Pine Bluff guard Martaveous McKnight put up 16 points.
McKnight is the only Arkansas-Pine Bluff player averaging in double-figures this year with 18.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG and 3.6 APG. That said, Tavon Harper is close to that threshold for the Lions with 9.9 PPG.
The Jaguars are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven Friday games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games. Southern is also 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the Southwestern Athletic.
Meanwhile, the Lions are 4-10 ATS in the last 14 overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the Southwestern Athletic. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is also 1-5 ATS in their last six neutral-site games and the over is 4-1 in their last five overall.
Southern had a couple of solid-scoring games going (but still lost) before putting up 69 and 62 points respectively in their last two games. These two teams have split their season series so far, with the home team taking each game. Both have been rather close, and I expect this one to be as well. I’m going with Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s upward-trending offense here, though.
