The George Mason Patriots bang heads with the St. Joseph’s Hawks in Atlantic Ten college basketball playoff action.
The George Mason Colonials needed a late rally to edge the Massachusetts Minutemen 80-75 and advance to the quarterfinals. George Mason was outshot 53.2%-33.9% but stayed competitive with 17 more shots and a 28-16 advantage at the stripe.

The Patriots received 21 points from Otis Livingston II on 3-11 and 14-14 from the stripe followed by Goanar Mar with 16 points on 4-9 and 7-9 at the line. Javon Greene and AJ Wilson tossed in eleven points apiece with Wilson hauling in nine rebounds.
The St. Joseph’s Hawks were just 15-15 on the year but were playing their best basketball with wins in six of seven to nab 4th in the A-10 with a first round bye. St Joseph’s narrowly outscored opponents 73.9-72.4 and generally met or exceeded those numbers in the final weeks.
Shavar Newkirk topped the Hawks offense with 17.6 points and 4.3 yanks but sometimes struggled to find his shot at 38.8%. James Demery gave St. Joseph’s another 17 points with 5.5 rebounds followed by Taylor Funk with 11.9 points and 4.6 boards.
I am a St. Joes fan and I’m hoping for a run in the postseason with the team heating up. If the line is not much more then a few baskets or so I might back the Hawks…
