We have some second round NCAA tournament action out of the East region as the #13 seed Marshall Thundering Herd take on the #4 seed Wichita State Shockers in a college basketball matchup on Friday afternoon from the Viejas Arena.
The Marshall Thundering Herd received an invite to the big dance as a #13 seed after emerging as the C-USA conference tournament champions following a 24-10 overall record, including a 12-6 conference record that was good for the #4 seed and a first round bye. The Herd took down UTSA ad Southern Miss before recording a 67-66 win over Western Kentucky in the championship game on Saturday. Marshall dealt with a pretty decent schedule out of conference, hanging tough against a #1 tournament seed in Xavier while also recording wins over Ohio, Toledo and Akron. Elmore leads the Herd with an average of 22.8 points and 6.9 assists per game while Ajdin Penava leads Marshall in rebounding with 8.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Marshall is scoring 84.3 points per game on 46.9% shooting from the field, 35.4% from behind the 3-point line and 76.7% from the foul line this season.

The Wichita State Shockers come into the tournament as a #4 seed after receiving an at-large bid thanks to a 25-7 overall record, including a 14-4 record in AAC play that was good for the #2 seed, receiving a first round bye before notching a quarterfinals win over Temple and falling to eventual conference runner-up Houston in the semifinals. The Shockers prepared for their first run in AAC conference play by taking down some tough opposition out of conference, with wins over Cal, Marquette, Baylor and Oklahoma State and fellow tournament team South Dakota State with their lone losses coming against Notre Dame and another tournament team in Oklahoma. Landry Shamet leads the Shockers with an average of 15 points and 5.1 assists per game while Rashard Kelly leads Wichita State on the glass with 7.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Wichita State is scoring 83 points per game on 47.8% shooting from the field, 38.5% from behind the arc and 73.8% from the foul line this season.
Marshall is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games while the over is 14-5 in their last 19 non-conference games. Wichita State is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 7-20-1 ATS in their last 28 neutral site games while the over is 15-3 in their last 18 games overall.
Wichita State to me looks like a dark horse to emerge out of the East region, however laying double digits just because it’s a 4 against a 13 doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Marshall has the offense to hang with the Shockers, and while the Herd had a couple of obstacles knocked down on their way to the C-USA championship, the fact is that Marshall didn’t get there by a fluke. This offense is good and gives the Herd a chance here also considering that the Shockers have struggled ATS as of late, so I’ll take a shot at Marshall and the points here.
