The Central Michigan Chippewas finished their regular season with a 19-14 overall record however, struggled a bit in conference play this season and couldn’t advance to the NCAA Tournament after losing to the Buffalo Bulls by an 89-74 margin in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament. Central Michigan gave the Bulls all they could handle after the Chippewas trailed by just a 77-74 margin with 2:35 left in regulation, however, struggled offensively down the stretch and allowed Buffalo to pull away for the victory. Central Michigan shot just 36.1% from the field and 21.4% (6-28) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Chippewas was Cecil Williams who had a double-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks, and an assist. Defensively, Central Michigan is allowing their opponents to average 72.5 ppg on 43.5% shooting from the field. The Chippewas have a rebound margin of 0.8 and a turnover margin of 1.6.
The Fort Wayne Mastodons finished their season with a 18-14 overall record and although they fought back after trailing by a 49-31 margin at halftime in their quarterfinals matchup against the North Dakota State Bison to make it game late, the Mastodons just couldn’t get enough defensive stops to get the victory. Fort Wayne allowed North Dakota State to shoot 51.9% from the field and 52.4% (11-21) from beyond the arc and couldn’t fight back after two Paul Miller free-throws gave the Bison a 4-point lead with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation. Will update trends when they are released.
Central Michigan played well down the stretch as they picked nice wins over Ball State and Western Michigan and has been led by their offense this season which ranks 71st in scoring offense, 38th in three-pointers per game, and 2nd FT%. Fort Wayne has also been led by their offense this season which ranks 25th in scoring offense, 15th in three-pointers made per game, and 88th in 3P-FG%. This should be a high-scoring game as both teams put up a good amount points while playing little defense, however, Central Michigan comes into this matchup playing better basketball as of late and as the Chippewas are a bit better on the defensive end, I think Central Michigan does enough with the points to cover.
