Coming up from Viejas Arena on Friday, the College of Charleston Cougars will be taking on the Auburn Tigers in First Round NCAA Tournament college basketball activity.
Charleston enters this game with a 26-7 record overall. The Cougars have won their last three games, and took out Northeastern back last Tuesday in the CAA championship. In that one, Charleston guard Joe Chealey put up 32 points.
USA TODAY Sports
Grant Riller is the lead scorer for the Cougars with 18.7 PPG on the year. Charleston also has Chealey (18.5 PPG: 4.7 RPG; 3.6 APG) and Jarrell Brantly (17.0 PPG: 7.1 RPG) in double-figures.
Over on the Auburn side, they’re sitting at 25-7 on the year. The Tigers have lost three of their last four games, and dropped to Alabama back on March 9. In that game, Auburn’s leading scorer was Mustapha Heron with 18 points.
Heron is the top scorer on the year for Auburn with 16.6 PPG and 5.5 RPG. Also in double-figures for the Tigers are Bryce Brown (16.2 PPG), Jared Harper (13.7 PPG: 5.7 APG) and Desean Murray (10.3 PPG; 6.8 RPG).
The Cougars are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a straight-up win and 19-50-1 ATS in their last 70 following an ATS win. Charleston is also 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the SEC and 1-6 ATS in their last seven Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games following a straight-up loss and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 following an ATS loss. Auburn is also 10-4 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Friday games.
Charleston’s record looks great since January 13, as they’ve got just one OT loss in that time. The Cougars’ CAA Tournament games weren’t exactly blowouts—and they had to battle back against Northeastern and win in OT. That said, with Auburn coming off as less than impressive lately, I don’t feel weird here going for the Cougars on a cover.
