Demonrae Jefferson carried the Tigers offense as he poured in a game high 25 points with eight rebounds and three steals on 8-18 followed by Donte Clark with 18 points and seven boards on 5-16. Travon Reed gave Texas Southern ten points and eight pulls on 4-4 while Derrick Bruce chipped in with nine points on 3-10.
The Xavier Musketeers finished third in the national polls after winning the regular season Big East crown. Xavier dropped a 75-72 overtime decision to the Providence Friars in the conference semifinals with the team blowing a 14 point halftime lead. The Musketeers never found their offense with 36.8% shooting which made the Friars 43.8% marksmanship decisive.
Kerem Kanter kept Xavier in this until the end with 18 points on 7-9 and 3-3 at the line followed by Paul Scruggs with 15 points on 4-5 including 5-5 at the stripe. The Musketeers saw Trevon Bluiett add 13 points and six boards on 2-14 and 8-8 at the line while JP Macura and Naji Marshall combined for 13 points and 17 rebounds.
