The Duke Blue Devils and Ryerson University meet Wednesday in college basketball preseason action at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre.
Ryerson University is coming off a 73-78 loss to the Chinese Men’s National Team, a game in which these young players hung around against grown men and gained the experience of playing in a packed house. Ryerson University will certainly be able to use that experience for this match, and it’s only going to make this a better team moving forward. Of course, Ryerson University went toe-to-toe with the SMU Mustangs in a preseason game last year, only losing by 12 points. Ryerson University finished last season with a 17-6 record and was 13-4 at home. Myles Charvis returns after averaging 12 points and four assists, while Jean-Victor Mukama averaged 11.3 points and 7.9 rebounds. Keevon Small averaged 4.8 rebounds last year and Filip Vujadinovic is a senior who played 21 minutes per game. Ryerson University is an experienced squad that should be eager to make a statement against one of the more talented college teams in the world.

The Duke Blue Devils know they have one of the more talented teams in the country on paper, but this is also a group that will be replacing its entire starting lineup from last year, so there are some question marks. And while neither injury is serious enough to put the regular season in jeopardy, Duke will be without Cam Reddish and Tre Jones in these preseason games. The main thing Duke fans likely want to see is the play of R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson, two ridiculously talented freshmen who most of the country should know already thanks to social media. Williamson is a versatile player who is built like a grown man, and Barrett is from Ontario, so you know he’ll want to put on a show in front of his home fans. Those two players are key for Duke to make a national title run this upcoming season. Overall, the Duke Blue Devils have talent for days, but these exhibition games should be all about getting these freshmen some experience and prepared for a battle in the competitive and deep ACC.
Ryerson University is no pushover, as this club has experience and just took Team China down to the wire. Hanging around with SMU last year is also nothing to sneeze at. Add the fact Ryerson University is the home team and you can bet the packed house will want to see a monster upset, this will be a tougher than expected game for the young and banged up Duke Blue Devils. If we can get close to double-digit points, I'm taking it.
