The Cleveland State Vikings and Davidson Wildcats meet Tuesday in college basketball action at the John M. Belk Arena.
The Cleveland State Vikings managed to win 12 games last season and enter their second year under coach Dennis Felton. Cleveland State does lose two of its top-three scorers from last season, but Tyree Appleby is back after averaging 11.8 points and four assists on 44.2 percent shooting in his first year. Appleby will likely be the go-to guy on this squad, and Stefan Kenic should be able to take a step forward considering he’s a 6’9” forward who shot 37.1 percent from beyond the arc. The Cleveland State Vikings finished the season strong and should be able to carry over some of that momentum, but this is a very young team and there will likely be some growing pains early on this season. The Cleveland State Vikings have lost 13 of their last 15 road games.

The Davidson Wildcats have made the big dance twice in the last four years and are one of the favorites to win the A-10 this season. While having the stability under coach Bob McKillop certainly helps, a backcourt of Jon Axel Gudmundsson and Kellan Grady is one of the best in the country. That duo averaged 31.2 points and seven assists last season, and they should be up to the task of replacing one of the top players in program history in Peyton Aldridge. And while the depth of last years roster wasn’t great, getting a known shooter in KiShawn Pritchett back as a third wheel is certainly good enough to keep Davidson afloat. The Davidson Wildcats need to find consistent role players to become more of a balanced team, but this offensive punch is real and will be good enough to be a possible NCAA Tournament team for the second straight year. The Davidson Wildcats have won five straight home games.
The Vikings are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games, 14-32 ATS in their last 46 Tuesday games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games, 23-8-1 ATS in their last 32 Tuesday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Wildcats last 5 non-conference games and the over is 5-2 in Vikings last 7 road games.
The Cleveland State Vikings lost a lot of their scoring production from last season and it will take time to find guys capable of filling those holes. The Davidson Wildcats seem to replace scorers with other scorers, and they have two more this year in Jon Axel Gudmundsson and Grady. The Davidson Wildcats should be able to light it up offensively and leave Cleveland State in the dust. I'll take the home team in a blowout.
