The Siena Saints and the Providence Friars meet in college basketball action from the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

The Siena Saints will look to improve on what many would consider a forgettable 2017-18 campaign that saw the Saints finis with an 8-24 record, including just a 4-14 mark in conference play to finish in a tie for last with Marist in the conference tournament before losing to Quinnipiac in the opening round of the MAAC tournament. The challenge for the Saints in this upcoming season will be moving on without leading scorer Nico Clareth, who transferred to Nicholls State after a turbulent 2 1/2 year career with Siena, leaving the Saints without a double-digit scorer from last season The Saints also lost second leading scorer Roman Penn to a transfer to the Drake Bulldogs. The Saints do retain the services of Ahsante Shivers and Khallil Richard who combined for 17.5 points and 6.1 rebounds last season.

Providence vs. Siena - 11/6/18 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Providence Friars will look to build on yet another successful season under head coach Ed Cooley after Providence went 21-14 last season with a 10-8 record in Big East conference play to finish in a tie for 3rd, landing the 5th seed in the conference tournament. The Friars took down Creighton and top-seed Xavier before reaching the conference championship before falling to Villanova in a 3rd consecutive overtime game. The Friars received an at-large bid to the big dance as a 7-seed where the Friars fell to Texas A&M in the first round. The Friars have to move forward without Rodney Bullock and Kyron Cartwright who graduated after combining for 26.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.9 assists last season. The Friars do however return a core of 9 players from last season, including Alpha Diallo who averaged 13.2 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds for Providence last season. As a team, Providence averaged 73.6 points per game on 44.1% shooting from the field, 33.2% from behind the 3-point line and 70.4% from the foul line last season.

Siena is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games against the Big East and 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall while the under is 4-1-1 in their last 6 non-conference games. Providence is 3-14 ATS in their last 17 non-conference games and 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games against the MAAC while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games overall.

This is a lot of points to lay, considering that Siena has had a lot of success against the Big East and the spread. However, I just can’t put any faith into Siena after losing so much talent from last year’s squad that wasn’t that great to begin with. Providence is just the more talented team here and should have no problem getting the job done here.
