The Line: Seton Hall Pirates -17 -- Over/Under: 145 See the Latest Odds
We have some opening night non-conference college basketball action as the Wagner Seahawks take on the Seton Hall Pirates on Tuesday night.
The Wagner Seahawks come into this season looking to build on a very good 2017-18 campaign that saw the Seahawks finish with a 23-10 overall record, including 14-4 in Northeast Conference play to win the NEC’s regular season crown. The Seahawks took down Central Connecticut and Robert Morris before falling to LIU Brooklyn in the conference championship game. The Seahawks received an invite to the NIT, where the Seahawks’ stay was short lived as the Seahawks lost to Baylor in the opening round. Wagner has to move forward this year without their top two scorers from last season, as Blake Francis (17.3 PPG) transferred to Richmond and JoJo Cooper graduated from the program. Romone Saunders is back after averaging 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in his junior season for head coach Bashir Mason’s squad.

The Seton Hall Pirates come into this game looking to build on a strong 2017-18 season that saw the Pirates finish with a 22-12 overall record, including 10-8 in Big East conference play to finish in a three-way tie for third, losing to Butler in the conference tournament quarterfinals. The Pirates received an at-large bid to the Big Dance as a #8 seed, defeating NC State before losing to Kansas in the second round. The challenge for Seton Hall this year is replacing 4 of their top 5 scorers, as Khadeen Carrington, Ismael Sanogo, Desi Rodriguez and Angel Delgado all graduated from the program, leaving Myles Powell as the lone returning double-digit scorer from last year’s squad. The Pirates brought in a couple of huge replacement pieces however, adding Quincy McKinght who averaged 18.9 PPG last season for Sacred Heart and Taurean Thompson who averaged 20.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per 40 minutes for Syracuse. Only time will tell if the Pirates can make it another consecutive tournament appearance come March.
Wagner is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games while the over is 5-0-1 in their last 6 road games. Seton Hall is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 7-2 in their last 9 non-conference games.
The Pirates have taken a step back after such a loss from last year's squad, but the fact is that bringing in McKnight and Thompson will help ease the pain a little bit. The Seahawks had a good season last year, but they've lost some big talent as well, and lost to Seton Hall by 21 last season and had a hard time hanging around with above average opposition (ie. a 44-point loss to Missouri) so while laying this many points in the opening game is a tough proposition, I'll side with Seton Hall here.
