The La Salle Explorers and the Temple Owls meet in college basketball action from the Liacouras Center on Tuesday night.
The La Salle Explorers will hope to improve in their first season under new head coach Ashley Howard, after finishing with a 13-19 overall record in 2017-18, including a 7-11 mark in A-10 play, finishing in a three-way tie for 10th, ultimately receiving the 12th spot in the conference tournament where the Explorers lost to UMASS in the opening round. The Explorers lost two of their top four scorers from last year’s team, with B.J. Johnson (20.8 PPG, 8.3 RPG) and Amar Stukes (8.5 PPG) graduating, but thankfully La Salle brings back Pookie Powell for his senior season after averaging 16.9 points and 4.3 assists per game this season. Only time will tell if this ended up being a rebuild year for the Explorers or if La Salle can give Powell one more run at an A-10 title. As a team, La Salle averaged 72.9 points per game on 42.9% shooting from the field, 33% from behind the arc and 78.7% from the foul line last season.

The Temple Owls will look to improve in what will be head coach Fran Dunphy’s final season at the helm of the Owls’ squad. The Owls finished 17-16 last season, including 8-10 in AAC play to finish in 7th position, defeating Tulane in the 1st round bafore falling to Wichita State in the quarterfinals. The Owls said goodbye to senior Obi Enechionyia, but bring back their top two leading scorers in Quinton Rose and Shizz Alston who combined for 28.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game last season. As a team, Temple averaged 69.9 points per game on 42.5% shooting from the field, 35% from behind the 3-point line and 68.2% from the foul line last season.
La Salle is 8-21 ATS in their last 29 games overall and 16-35 ATS in their last 51 road games while the over is 12-5 in their last 17 non-conference games. Temple is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the A-10. La Salle is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at Temple.
Both sides have lost some talent, but I think La Salle had the bigger blow with the loss of B.J. Johnson. Temple still has their top two leading scorers from last season, and have had the upper hand ATS in this matchup at home, so I’ll side with Temple to get the job done here.
