The Long Beach State 49ers and the UCLA Bruins meet in college basketball action from Pauley Pavilion on Friday night.
The Long Beach State 49ers come into this season looking to improve on a 2017-18 campaign that saw the 49ers finish with a 15-18 overall record, including 9-7 in Big West play to finish with the #5 seed in the conference tournament. Long Beach State’s stay was short lived however, losing to eventual tournament champion Cal State Fullerton in the quarterfinals. The 49ers will be moving forward without leading scorer Gabe Levin, but still bring back the majority of last year’s squad, including leading assist man Deishuan Booker (10.6 PPG, 4.6 APG) and Bryan Alberts (11.3 PPG) only time will tell if head coach Dan Monson can get the 49ers back to a winning record for just the second time since 2013.

The UCLA Bruins will be looking to build on their solid start to the season, coming in the form of a 96-71 win over IPFW on Tuesday night. Kris Wilkes led the Bruins with 27 points on 11 of 19 shooting with 10 rebound for the double-double while Moses Brown added a double-double of his own with 19 points on 9 of 10 shooting with a game-high 17 rebounds. Jaylen Hands came right behind with 18 points and a game-high 7 assists, while Chris Smith added 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting with 3 triples and 8 rebounds to round out UCLA’s scoring in double digits in the winning effort. As a team, UCLA is averaging 96 points per game on 54.1% shooting from the field, 32% from behind the 3-point line and 47.1% from the foul line this season.
Long Beach State is 11-26 ATS in their last 37 games against the Pac-12 and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 games overall. UCLA is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against the Big West and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 non-conference games. Long Beach State is 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams and 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams at UCLA.
Long Beach State is the more rested team here, but even with a rest advantage, I need to get a sample size from the 49ers before putting any confidence in Dan Monson’s team. UCLA looked solid against IPFW and have had the bulk of the success ATS when these two teams lock up, so I’ll side with UCLA at home and lay the points.
