The Illinois State Redbirds and the Belmont Bruins meet in college basketball action from Curb Event Center on Saturday night.
The Illinois State Redbirds will look to build some momentum after starting their season on a high note with a 74-66 win over Florida Gulf Coast in their last outing. Phil Fayne, Josh Jefferson and Milik Yarbrough each had 17 points, with Fayne adding 11 rebounds for the double-double while Jefferson shot 6 of 7 from the floor with 5 threes and Yarbrough added 9 rebounds to round out the trio of double digit scorers for the Redbirds in the winning effort. As a team, Illinois State is averaging 74 points on 43.9% shooting from the field, 29.2% from behind the 3-point line and 70.8% from the charity stripe after their opening game of the season.

The Belmont Bruins come into the 2018-19 campaign looking to build on a solid 2017-18 campaign that saw Belmont finish with a 24-9 record, including 15-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play, to finish in 2nd place. The Bruins received a bye to the semis of the conference tournament, defeating Austin Peay, and advancing to the finals where the Bruins were defeated by Murray State. However, despite having a 24-win season, the Bruins did not participate in any postseason tournament action. Amanze Egekeze is gone after his senior season in which he averaged 16.8 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Bruins, but Belmont does bring back Dylan Windler who led Belmont with 17.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in addition to Kevin McClain who was Belmont’s third double digit scorer with 12.6 points per game last season.
Illinois State is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against the Ohio Valley conference while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. Belmont is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 home games while the over is 8-0 in their last 8 home games.
You can bet that Belmont will be itching to get back onto the court here, but if we’re being honest I liked what I saw from Illinois State in their opener and the Redbirds have returned most of their lineup from last season. Belmont is a tough out at home, but I think Illinois State has enough going for them to pull off the outright upset here so I’ll take the Redbirds and the points.
