The North Dakota Fighting Hawks will travel to the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena to take on the Milwaukee Panthers this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The North Dakota Fighting Hawks had no trouble opening their season up with a victory after they defeated the D-III Northland College Lumberjacks, 104-48, this past Tuesday. This game was pretty much over as soon as it started as the Fighting Hawks took an early lead and went into halftime up by a commanding 56-21 margin. North Dakota shot 53.8% from the field and 48.3% (14-29) from beyond the arc while holding Northland College to just 32.3% shooting. North Dakota outrebounded the Lumberjacks by a 47-30 margin and won the turnover battle by a 14-10 margin. Leading the way for the Fighting Hawks was Cortez Seales who had 16 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals in just 16 minutes of action. Freshman Aanen Moody was impressive in this college debut as he had 20 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in just 15 minutes of action from off the bench. Elijah Hazekamp chipped in with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and an assist.
The Milwaukee Panthers will look to bounce back after suffering a 73-53 defeat at the hands of the Boston College Eagles in their season opener this past Tuesday. Milwaukee outplayed Boston College in the 1st half and went into halftime with a 37-27 lead, however, the wheels came off quickly in the 2nd half after a 32-8 Eagle run gave Boston College a 59-48 lead late in the 2nd half. Milwaukee held Boston College to just 39.3% shooting from the field however, the Panthers really struggled on the offensive end as they shot just 27.7% from the field and 29.6% (8-27) from beyond the arc. Milwaukee was outrebounded by the Eagles by a 49-38 margin and only forced Boston College into committing 8 turnovers. Leading the way for the Panthers was Darius Roy who had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and a steal in 29 minutes from off the bench. DeAndre Abram had 9 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block while Jake Wright chipped in with 11 points.
The Fighting Hawks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Panthers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
It wasn’t too long ago in which North Dakota was dancing in the NCAA Tournament however, this years Fighting Hawks are going to have a hard time just staying out of the basement in their first season in the Summit League. North Dakota returns some experience in Conner Avants, Cortez Seales, and Marlon Stewart however, it’s going to be really difficult for North Dakota to replace Geno Crandall. Defense was a huge problem for the Fighting Hawks last season as they ranked 335th in scoring defense and 342nd in scoring defense. Milwaukee has a lot of new faces on their team and although they have to be disappointed with the outcome of their game agianst Boston College, they certainly can take some positives with their performance in the 1st half. Milwaukee is going to have a hard time scoring the basketball this season, however, the Panthers generally have always put a tough defensive team on the court.
North Dakota got a feel good win in their season opener however, this is going to be a team that struggles on both side of the ball. Although you have to always be concerned about the Panthers putting up enough points to cover spreads, I think Milwaukee will find some success at home agianst the Fighting Hawks defense and do enough to cover this mid-range spread. Take Milwaukee to cover.
