The Southern Utah Thunderbirds and the San Jose State Spartans will match up on the college basketball scene Saturday from Event Center Arena.
Southern Utah enters this season following a 13-19 mark last year, and they went 5-13 in Big Sky play for a 10th-place finish. The Thunderbirds beat Idaho State and Idaho in the conference tournament before falling to Eastern Washington in the semis.

The Thunderbirds made quick work of West Coast Baptist in their first action of this year, winning 109-63 behind Dwayne Morgan’s 20 points and six rebounds. Cameron Oluyitan added 19 points and Harrison Butler had 15 points with seven rebounds.
Over on the San Jose State side, they’re fresh off a 4-26 year with a paltry 1-17 mark in Mountain West play, leaving them in last place. The Spartans fell in the first round of the conference tourney to Wyoming.
San Jose State took out the Life Pacific College Warriors 89-72 in their first game this season, with Seneca Knight leading the way on 17 points. Michael Steadman posted a double-double with his 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Spartans.
The Thunderbirds are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five versus the Mountain West and 9-1 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games. Southern Utah is 2-5 ATS in their last seven versus a team with a winning straight-up record and the over is 4-0 in their last four Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Spartans are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six home games. San Jose State is 2-5 ATS in their last seven versus the Big Sky and 1-5 ATS in their last six following a straight-up win.
Southern Utah showed some spark last season in the tournament, and they continued the good vibes with a well-balanced showing in their first action of this year.
As for San Jose State, the expectations here can’t get much lower, but they should receiver a nice lift from drilling an outmatched team in their opener.
All things considered, I think this one belongs to the Thunderbirds.
