The Quinnipiac Bobcats and the Villanova Wildcats meet in a college basketball matchup from the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats come into this year looking to improve on a 2017-18 campaign that saw the Bobcats finish with a 12-21 overall record, including 7-11 in MAAC play to finish in a tie for 7th place. As the 7-seed in the MAAC tournament, the Bobcats took down Siena and pulled off an upset against Canisius before being eliminated by Fairfield in the conference semifinals. Head coach Baker Dunleavy has his work cut out for him after losing two of his three double digit scorers from last season, including leading scorer and rebounder Cameron Young (18.8 PPG, 6.6 RPG) and Chaise Daniels (10.8 PPG, 4 RPG) as seniors last season. The good news is that Rich Kelly is back after averaging 11.1 points and a team-high 4.7 assists per game last season. As a team, Quinnipiac averaged 71.6 points on 42.2% shooting from the field, 33.9% from behind the arc and 70.6% from the foul line last season.

The Villanova Wildcats started their title defense on a high note, taking down Morgan State in their season opener by a final score of 100-77. Eric Paschall led the Wildcats with 26 points on 7 of 11 shooting with an 11 of 12 mark from the foul line and 7 rebounds. Phil Booth added 17 points and Saddiq Bey came right behind with 16 points while Jermaine Samuels added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. Joe Cremo added 3 triples to put up 10 points and round out the scoring in double digits for the Wildcats. Collin Gillespie added 6 points to match his team-high 6 assists while Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree added 4 points, 7 boards and 3 blocks in the victory. As a team, Villanova is averaging 100 points on 50.7% shooting from the field, 32.4% from behind the 3-point line and 74.1% from the foul line after their opening game.
Quinnipiac is 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 road games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 non-conference games. Villanova is 16-5 ATS in their last 21 home games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games against the MAAC.
Quinnipiac has a rest advantage and will be looking forward to finally taking the court, but I’m not sure going up against Villanova without your leading scorer from last season is a position you want to be in heading into this one. Villanova made light work of Morgan State in their last outing, and I’m expecting more of the same against Quinnipiac here so I’ll side with the Wildcats in a rout.
