The Charleston Cougars will travel to the Ramsey Center to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The Charleston Cougars kicked off their 2018-19 season in winning fashion as they defeated the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 85-73, this past Tuesday. Charleston went into halftime up by a 36-30 margin and pulled away for the victory after a 10-2 run gave the Cougars a 75-62 lead with 3:05 left in regulation. Charleston shot just 41.4% from the field and 26.1% (6-23) from beyond the arc, however, did damage at the FT-line as they shot 80.8% (21-26). Charleston dominated on the boards as they outrebounded the Blue Hose by a 40-30 margin and committed just 8 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Cougars was Grant Riller who had 27 points, 4 rebounds & 2 assists. Jarrell Brantley had a big game as he went for a double-double with 19 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks & 2 steals and Zep Jasper chipped in with 15 points & 3 rebounds.
The Western Carolina Catamounts will look to bounce back after they opened up their season with a 96-73 loss at the hands of the Wright State Raiders this past Tuesday. Western Carolina had no answers on either end of the court in the 1st half and couldn’t fight back after they went into halftime trailing by a 52-26 margin. Western Carolina shot just 42.9% from the field while they allowed the Raiders to shoot 55.2% from the field and 46.2% (12-26) from beyond the arc. Western Carolina was outrebounded by Wright State by a 37-34 margin also lost the turnover battle by a 16-14 margin. Leading the way for the Catamounts was Carlos Dotson who had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal. D.J. Myers had a decent overall game as he had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Matt Halvorsen chipped in with 16 points, 3 assists, 1 rebound and a steal.
The Cougars are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss and 14-6-2 ATS in their last 22 Saturday games. The Catamounts are 4-0 ATS int their last 4 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points, however, just 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Charleston was one of the better mid-major programs last season as they finished their season with a 26-8 record which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament which they almost upset Auburn in the first round. The Cougars no longer have Joe Chealey, however, this is still a very talented team that brings back a bunch of talent led by Grant Riller & Jarrell Brantley. Western Carolina struggled on the both sides of the ball last season and although they did return some experience with Marc Gosselin & matt Halvorsen, it’s hard to imagine that the Catamounts have improved significantly from a team that ranked 295th in scoring offense, 327th in FG%, and 262nd in scoring defense.
Western Carolina was outplayed on both ends of the court agianst Wright State and as I feel that Charleston is at worst, on the same level as the Raiders, I think Charleston does enough to cover this double-digit road spread.
