The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos will travel to the Scheels Center to take on the North Dakota State Bison this Sunday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos will look to go 2-0 on the year after they opened up their 2018-19 season with a solid 76-66 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys this past Tuesday. UC Santa Barbara was solid on the defensive end throughout the game and was able to pull away for the victory after a 5-0 run gave the Gauchos a 69-62 lead with just 2:17 left in regulation. UC Santa Barbara shot 51.1% from the field while holding the Cowboys to just 36.2% shooting from the field and 17.2% from beyond the arc. UC Santa Barbara outrebounded Wyoming by a 40-29 margin however, did struggle with turnovers as they lost the turnover battle by a 18-9 margin. Leading the way for the Gauchos was JaQuori McLaughlin who had 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Deveral Ramsey had a solid game with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal while Amadou Sow chipped in with 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 steals.
The North Dakota State Bison will look to bounce back after they opened up their season with a 73-56 defect at the hands of the New Mexico State Aggies this past Tuesday. North Dakota State allowed New Mexico State to race out to an 18-3 lead to start the game and couldn’t fight back after trailing by a 36-20 margin at halftime. North Dakota State shot just 35.7% from the field & 37.0% (10-27) from beyond the arc while allowing the Aggies to shot 43.9% from the field. The Bison were outrebounded by a 47-31 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 11-8 margin. Leading the way for the Bison was Rocky Kreuser who was the only Bison to score in double-digits after finishing the game with 23 points & 5 rebounds. Tyson Ward chipped in with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists while Tyree Eady had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal in 21 minutes from off the bench.
The Gauchos are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and 12-3 ATS in their last 15 road games. The Bison are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a winning road record however, are just 2-9 ATS in their last 11 home games.
UC Santa Barbara had one of the biggest positive turnarounds last season as the Gauchos finished their season with an overall record of 23-9 (11-5) which was a 17 win improvement from the year before. UC Santa Barbara has a lot of roster turnover however, do return a very talented player in Max Heidegger and have a bunch of transfers that should allow the Gauchos to stay competitive in the Big West this season. North Dakota State had a down year last season, finishing the season with just a 15-17 overall record. The Bison no longer have Paul Miller (19.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.4 apg) or A.J. Jacobson (9.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.6 apg) however, do have some experience returning in Tyson Ward (11.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.6 apg) and Cameron Hunter (9.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.4 apg).
North Dakota is a tough play to play however, I’m intrigued to see where the scoring is going to come from for the Bison who struggled agianst New Mexico State in their season opener. UC Santa Barbara is an above average team who plays well on the road and I think they’ll do enough to pick up the win in this one. I’m taking UC Santa Barbara and the point in this one.
