The Youngstown State Penguins will travel to Rose Hill Gymnasium to take on the Columbia Lions this Friday night in College Basketball action.
The Youngstown State Penguins picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-2 on the year, after defeating the D-III Heidelberg Student Princes 106-83 this past Monday. Youngstown State had more of a battle on their hands than they expected but was able to pull away for the victory after a 20-5 run gave the Penguins an 80-62 lead with 9:29 left in regulation. Youngstown State shot 49.3% from the field while holding Heidelberg to just 37.5% shooting from the field and 37.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Youngstown State won the rebound margin by a 52-34 margin and forced the Student Princes into committing 22 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Penguins was Garrett Covington who had 21 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 2 steals.
On the season, Youngstown State is averaging 76.0 ppg on 39.9% shooting from the field. The Penguins are averaging 8.0 three-pointers per game on 28.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Youngstown State has been led by Olamide Pedersen (12.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.3 bpg), Garrett Covington (10.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.7 spg), Devin Morgan (8.3 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.7 apg), and Naz Bohannon (6.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 3.3 apg). Defensively, Youngstown State is allowing their opponents to average 83.3 ppg on 46.7% shooting from the field. The Penguins have a rebound margin of 5.3 and a turnover margin of -3.7.
The Columba Lions will look to pick up their first win of the season after they drop their season opener last Saturday to the Marist Red Foxes by an 82-76 margin. Columba struggled on the defensive end against the Red Foxes and couldn’t fight back after the Red Foxes took a 77-64 lead with 1:52 left in regulation. Columba shot 46.4% from the field however, allowed the Red Foxes to shoot 50.9% from the field and 42.9% from beyond the arc. Columba was outrebounded by Marist by a 39-32 margin and committed 14 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Lions was Mike Smith who had 23 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals.
Columba returns a solid amount of experience however, it going to be tough to expect much improvement from the Lions unless they improve a defense that ranked 289th in scoring defense and 237th in defensive FG%. The Lions return their top three scorers in Mike Smith (17.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.1 spg), Quinton Adlesh (11.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.1 spg), and Lukas Meisner (11.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.8 apg) and will be hoping that Gabe Stefanini & Randy Brumant can make bigger contributions in the starting five this season.
The Penguins are 5-13 ATS in their last 18 games following a straight up win and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Lions are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 neutral site games however, are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
Youngstown State is not a very good team however, I expect the Penguins to find some more success on the offense agianst a Columbia team that still hasn’t proven it has fixed their defense and just lost to a Marist team that picked up only 6 wins a year ago. I think Columbia is going to win this game, but this is just too many points that I can trust the Lions to cover. Take Youngstown State and the points.
