The Providence Friars improved to 2-1 on the young season after defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders, 70-61, this past Tuesday night. Holy Cross gave Providence a run for their money however, the Friars were able to pull away late after a 7-0 Friars run gave Providence a 66-57 lead with 1:56 left in regulation. Providence shot 45.8% from the field while holding Holy Cross to just 36.1% shooting from the field and 38.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Providence outrebounded Holy Cross by a 41-36 margin and forced 14 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Friars was Alpha Diallo who had a double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block.

On the season, Providence is averaging 75.7 ppg on 48.8% shooting from the field. The Friars are averaging 10.0 three-pointers per game on 42.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Providence has been led by Alpha Diallo (20.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.0 spg), A.J. Reeves (17.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.0 spg), Isaiah Jackson (11.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.7 apg, 2.7 spg), and David Duke (6.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.3 apg). The Gamecocks are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games vs. Big East opponents however, are just 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games following an ATS loss. The Friars are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 Saturday games.

Both of these teams aren’t as strong as we’ve seen in recent years, however, I have a lot more concerns with South Carolina than I do with the Friars with what I’ve seen so far this season. Providence has a more balanced lineup and a talented freshman class which will only get better as the season goes on and as I think that Providence will be able to put up points up agianst the South Carolina defense, I’m taking Providence to cover this small spread.
