The California Golden Bears and the Temple Owls will face off this Tuesday night in the Gotprint.com Legends Classic at the Barclays Center.
The California Golden Bears dropped to 1-2 on the young season after being defeated by the St. John’s Red Storm, 82-79, on Monday night. California fought back from a 38-31 halftime deficit to take a 67-60 lead with 6:43 left to go, however, allowed St. John to regain the lead late after a Shamorie Ponds three-pointer for the Red Storm gave St. Johns a 78-74 lead with 1:06 remaining. California shot 56.9% from the field however, allowed St. John’s to shoot 54.7% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc. In the loss. California was outrebounded by St. John’s by a 27-23 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 12-11 margin. Leading the way for the Golden Bears was Justice Sueing who had 19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block.
Coming into their game agianst St. John’s, California was averaging 69.5 ppg on 42.7% shooting from the field. The Golden Bears were averaging 5.0 three-pointers per game on 41.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, California has been led by Paris Austin (18.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.0 spg), Justice Sueing (15.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.0 bpg), Darius McNeill (11.3 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 2.3 spg), and Andre Kelly (10.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg). Defensively, California is allowing their opponents to average 71.0 ppg on 38.2% shooting from the field. The Golden Bears have a rebound margin of -6.0 and a turnover margin of 0.5.
The Temple Owls suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 4-1 on the year, after being defeated by the VCU Rams, 57-51, on Monday night. In a defensive game, Temple fought back from a 13-point 1st half deficit to take a 48-44 lead with 4:36 left in regulation, however, struggled offensively the rest of the way and allowed VCU walk away from the victory. Temple shot 32.3% from the field and 14.3% from beyond the arc in the loss. Temple outrebounded VCU by a 41-37 margin and forced VCU into committing 19 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Owls was Nate Pierre-Louis who had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, and an assist.
Coming into their game agianst the Rams, Temple was averaging 80.0 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field. The Owls were averaging 7.0 three-pointers per game on 32.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Temple has been led by Shizz Alston Jr. (18.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.8 spg), Quinton Rose (16.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.8 spg), Nate Pierre-Louis (13.4 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 1.6 apg, 2.8 spg), and Ernest Aflakpui (6.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg). California is going to struggle this season as this is a team that notched just 8 wins on the season last year and currently like size in the front court. Temple is always a tough team and has a great one-two punch in Shizz Alston Jr. & Quinton Rose and as I think the Owls will have a solid advantage on the boards, I’m taking Temple to cover this mid-range spread.
