The Eastern Illinois Panthers will travel to U.S. Cellular Center (NC) to take on the UNC Wilmington Seahawks this Sunday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The Eastern Illinois Panthers won their 3rd straight game and improved to 3-2 on the season after defeating the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 90-86 (OT), yesterday afternoon. Eastern Illinois trailed for the majority of the game, however, fought back from a 66-57 deficit with 4:45 left in regulation to force OT and was able to pull away for the victory after taking an 85-80 lead with 1:47 left in overtime. Eastern Illinois shot 47.5% from the field and 42.9% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Panthers was Josiah Wallace who had 31 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Coming into their game agianst Arkansas State, Eastern Illinois was averaging 67.8 ppg on 38.7% shooting from the field. The Panthers were averaging 7.8 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Eastern Illinois has been led by Josiah Wallace (13.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.3 apg), Rade Kukobat (12.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.8 bpg), Mack Smith (10.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.3 apg), and Shareef Smith (9.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.8 spg).
Defensively, Eastern Illinois was allowing their opponents to average 71.5 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field. The Panthers had a rebound margin of 2.3 and a turnover margin of -1.3.
The UNC Wilmington Seahawks had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 2-4 on the season after being defeated by the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, 81-72, on Saturday night. UNC Wilmington came out of the gates slow in this one and although they fought back late, couldn’t never overcome going into halftime trailing by a 42-27 margin. UNC Wilmington had no answers for the Bulldogs Nate Johnson & Jose Perez who combined for almost half of Garner-Webb’s offensive production. Leading the way for the Seahawks was Jeantal Cylla who had 22 points.
Coming into their game against Gardner-Webb, UNC Wilmington was averaging 80.8 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Seahawks were averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game on 32.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UNC Wilmington has been led by Devontae Cacok (17.8 ppg, 14.4 rpg, 1.2 spg), Jaylen Fornes (10.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.0 apg), Ty Taylor II (10.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.0 spg), and Jeantal Cylla (9.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.2 apg).
Defensively, UNC Wilmington was allowing their opponents to average 77.8 ppg on 44.9% shooting from the field. The Seahawks had a rebound margin of 8.6 and a turnover margin of -5.0.
The Panthers are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 Sunday games and 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Seahawks are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 non-conference games and just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Eastern Illinois should be improved last year now that they have a few key players back after missing last season from injury, however, it’s going to be tough pick up many wins with an offense that tanks T-303rd in scoring offense and T-324th in FG%. UNC-Wilmington has one of the best big men in the country in Devontae Cacok and once again should be solid on the offensive end as they play at a fast pace and have some decent scorers in Jalyen Fornes & Ty Taylor II. This game has yet to be lined, but I’m initially leaning on taking the Seahawks to cover about a 2-4 point spread.
