The VCU Rams and the Texas Longhorns meet in college basketball action from the Frank Erwin Special Events Center on Wednesday night.

The VCU Rams will be looking to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 5 games, including an 88-59 rout of Iona in their last outing. Marcus Evans led the Rams with 19 points on 4 of 10 shooting with 3 threes and an 8 of 10 mark from the foul line along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals while Marcus Santos-Silva added 12 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Corey Douglas and Mike’l Simms each had 11 points to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for VCU in the win, with Douglas adding 4 blocks while Simms had 3 threes and 6 rebounds. Evans leads the Rams in scoring with 14.1 points per game while Santos-Silva leads VCU in rebounding with 6.1 boards per game and Issac Vann leads the Rams with 2.8 assists per game this season. As a team, VCU is averaging 70.2 points per game on 41% shooting from the field, 30.1% from behind the arc and 65.9% from the foul line this season.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Longhorns will be looking to rebound from back-to-back losses after a 62-59 loss to Radford in their last outing. Jericho Sims led the Longhorns with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 8 rebounds as the only Texas player to score in double figures in the losing effort. Dylan Osetkowski had 9 points and a game-high 17 rebounds with a pair of blocks while Jaxson Hayes added 8 points with 3 blocks. Kerwin Roach II had just 7 points on 2 of 12 shooting with 7 rebounds and a team-high 3 assists, but still leads Texas on the year with an average of 16.7 points and 4.3 assists per game while Osetkowski leads the Longhorns with an average of 9.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Texas is averaging 75 points per game on 40.4% shooting from the field, 40.4% from behind the arc and 29.3% from the foul line this season.

VCU is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against the Big 12 and 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 games overall. Texas is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall while the under is 20-8-1 in their last 29 non-conference games.

I know VCU has struggled with consistency as of late, but I’m not sure how anyone could consider laying nearly double-digits with Texas given how the Longhorns have played lately. VCU lost to a solid Old Dominion team that’s tough on defense and St. John’s on a neutral floor, and no offense to Radford, but that’s a game that Texas should’ve won easily. I’ll take the points with VCU as more of a fade from Texas more than anything.
