The Marshall Thundering Herd will travel to the Ted Constant Convocation Center to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs this Thursday night in College Basketball action.

The Marshall Thundering Herd lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 7-6 on the season after being defeated by the 4th ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 100-64, this past Monday. Marshall had no answers on either end of the court for the Cavaliers and couldn’t fight back after Virginia took a 50-25 lead at halftime. Marshall allowed Virginia to shoot 53.2% from the field while the Thundering Herd shot just 35.1% from the field & 27.3% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for Marshall was Jon Elmore who had 14 points, 3 assists, 1 rebound, ad 4 steals.

On the season, Marshall is averaging 80.6 ppg on 44.0% shooting from the field. The Thundering Herd are averaging 9.5 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Marshall has been led by Jon Elmore (19.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.7 spg), C.J. Burks (17.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.9 spg), Jannson Williams (9.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.7 bpg), and Rondale Watson (7.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.8 apg).

The Old Dominion Monarchs won their 8th straight game and improved to 10-3 on the season after defeating the Morgan State Bears, 76-53, this past Saturday. Old Dominion led by just a 30-26 margin at halftime, however, dominated the Bears on both ends in the 2nd half and pulled away after taking a 55-30 lead with 12:22 left in regulation. Old Dominion shot 45.2% from the field while holding Morgan State to just 28.0% shooting from the field & 21.4% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Monarchs was Aaron Carver who had a double-double with 10 points, 20 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals.

On the season, Old Dominion is averaging 66.4 ppg on 41.3% shooting from the field. The Monarchs are averaging 8.2 three-pointers per game on 35.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Old Dominion has been led by Ahmad Caver (18.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.7 spg), B.J. Stith (17.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.0 spg), Xavier Green (8.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.7 apg), and Marquis Godwin (7.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg).

Defensively, Old Dominion is holding their opponents to an average of 56.5 ppg on 35.2% shooting from the field. The Monarchs have a rebound margin of 5.4 and a turnover margin of 1.3.

The Thundering Herd are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. C-USA opponents however, are just 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Monarchs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 6-1 ATSA in their last 7 home games.

Marshall has one of the better scoring duos in the C-USA in Jon Elmore & C.J. Burks, however, the Thundering Herd lack depth and have really struggled defensively this season as they currently rank 338th in scoring defense & 301st in scoring defense. Old Dominion continues to rack up wins as they feature one of the better defenses in the country that currently ranks 4th in scoring defense & 2nd in defensive FG%. Marshall needs to put up a bunch of points and that’s been an issue for the Thundering Herd when they’ve faced strong defensive teams as they’ve averaged just 66.3 ppg in road games agianst Maryland, Texas A&M, and Virginia. Old Dominion has shown us that they can play agianst top-tier competition after their upset victory over Syracuse and as I think their offense will be able to put up more points than normal agianst the Thundering Herd defense, I’m taking Old Dominion to cover this spread.
