The NC State Wolfpack and the UNC Tar Heels meet in ACC college basketball action from the Dean E. Smith Center on Tuesday night.
The NC State Wolfpack will try to break out of a logjam in the middle of the ACC standings, sitting at 8-8 in conference play after a 67-61 loss to Florida State last time out. C.J. Bryce leads the Wolfpack with 13.3 PPG and 6.2 RPG while Markell Johnson is right behind with 13 PPG as well as a team-high 6.4 APG this season. Devon Daniels and DJ Funderburk each have 12+ PPG for the Wolfpack this season. As a team, NC State is averaging 74.3 points on 44.6% shooting from the field, 32.4% from 3-point range and 70.7% from the foul line while allowing 69 points on 42.2% shooting from the field and 31.8% from 3-point range this season. NC State is 5-5 straight up and 6-4 against the spread on the road this season.
The UNC Tar Heels will try to get out of the basement of the ACC, sitting at 3-13 in conference play after a 72-55 loss to Louisville last time out. Cole Anthony has 19.4 PPG, 6.3 RPG and 3.7 APG in 16 games while Garrison Brooks has 15.2 PPG and a team-high 8.5 RPG this season. Brandon Robinson has 12.4 PPG in 18 games while Armando Bacot has 10 PPG and 8.4 RPG this season. Leaky Black also has 6 PPG and 2.5 APG this season. As a team, UNC is averaging 70.6 points on 41.3% shooting from the field, 29.1% from 3-point range and 66.3% from the foul line while allowing 71.7 points on 41.8% shooting from the field and 33.5% from 3-point range this season. UNC is 5-8 straight up and 3-10 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the road team is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I get that UNC is still a talented team and this is a rivalry game so maybe the Tar Heels will get up for it here. However, UNC also hasn’t shown us anything outside of battling Duke to give us hope that they’ll be able to keep pace with NC State, even at home. I’m just not high on the Tar Heels, and while things could turn come conference tournament time, I’m just not seeing it yet. NC State has a win over Duke and held their own against Florida State. I think this just boils down to getting a free bucket with the team playing better basketball, so I’ll take the Wolfpack and the points in a game NC State could win outright.
