The Indiana State Sycamores and the Southern Illinois Salukis meet in MVC college basketball action from the Banterra Center on Wednesday night.
The Indiana State Sycamores will try to join the fray in the top 4 in the MVC standings, sitting at 9-7 in conference play after a 64-62 win over Evansville last time out. Tyreke Key leads the Sycamores in scoring with 16 PPG while Jordan Barnes has 12.4 PPG and a team-high 3.7 APG this season. Jake Laravia also has 9.2 PPG and a team-high 5.9 RPG this season. As a team, Indiana State is averaging 68.6 points on 45.1% shooting from the field, 38% from 3-point range and 71.1% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 66.7 points on 44.6% shooting from the field and 32% from 3-point range this season. Indiana State is 3-8 straight up and 3-7-1 against the spread on the road this season.
The Southern Illinois Salukis will try to create some distance from the Sycamores, sitting one spot above in the standings with a 10-6 mark in MVC play after a 64-52 loss to Northern Iowa last time out. Marcus Domask leads Southern Illinois in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 PPG and 5.6 RPG while Eric McGill has 11.3 PPG and 2.8 APG. Barret Benson has 10.7 PPG as well for SIU this season. As a team, Southern Illinois is averaging 62.6 points on 42.9% shooting from the field, 34.2% from 3-point range and 71.8% from the foul line while allowing 60.9 points on 42.2% shooting from the field and 30.1% from 3-point range this season. Southern Illinois is 12-2 straight up and 10-3 against the spread at home this season.
I get why the free bucket with Indiana State would be tempting, as a Sycamores win would throw a wrench in the top half of the MVC standings with this weekend being the last week of regular season action in the conference. However, Indiana State barely scraped by Evansville, and while a road win is a road win, the Sycamores looked far from convincing in that performance. Southern Illinois on the other hand can create some space near the top with a win here and the fact is that the Salukis have just been really, really tough at home this season. I’ll lay the bucket with Southern Illinois here.
